We are not getting him fixed and the vet never mentioned that. I am calling him now because I woke up this morning and there was blood everywhere in his crate. I want to see my options. I keep rolling it back in myself (thank you for that information BTW) but it just won't stay

Piper's 6 month old son was staying with me for a week. I noticed he was bleeding so I freaked out. My first call was to Laurie and my second was to Paula since I knew she had been thru it with otto. I called my vet and headed up. The vet checked it and said it was because Baxter was a horny teenage boy..... He gave me a steroid cream to put on three times a day. He bled on and off for the next 4 days and we had to keep him crated so he would not hump anyone or get too excited. He is back home with his parents again and it has not reoccured. Wish I saved the name of the meds but I gave Beth the meds and the receipt.

you need to find a vet who will do the tacking procedure. It's the least invasive and it has the fastest recovery time. It may need to be redone at some point, but that is better than amputation. DO NOT LET ANY VET CONVINCE YOU TO CUT IT OFF. Talk to Tom about his experience with Stanley.

My advice is to do nothing if he can pee and it isn't bleeding. There is no foolproof way to fix it at this time. Some vets want to cut it off and stitch it. That may not hold and it could come back worse.
I would do nothing and watch for bleeding. Don't let him hump toys or other dogs and don't let him rub it.

Many vets do not know how to do the purse string method or won't do it. Instead they want you to have major surgery. Don't do it. Find a vet that can and will. Dr Shaw said he had a male come to him once that looked more like a female. Some stupid vet had cut most of his dingaling off!
if you have no plans on showing him you should get him neutered if he is humping lots.

thanks, I did that yesterday a few times but it didn't seem to do anything. I did it a few more times since your message. I really hope it works. I am trying to keep hikm from getting excited and to do that to a 8 month old dog is not easy! He bleeds a lot everytime he gets excited..I guess we are off to the vet tomorrow. I am so worried..

pull the sheeth back and expose the tip of the penis, then if you bring all your finger tips together like you make your fingers talk to your thumb.....
do that over the bulb on the prolapse, and run down and off the end of the penis, it makes the bulb go down. You may need to do this a few times a day.
I have done it with 2 boys and it corrected and never came back. they are not adults and no problems.

Dr Shaw in IL charged about $225 a few years ago for the purse string method. We were in and out of there in about an hour. The stitches stay in until mother nature gets rid of them.
My local bulldog vet wanted me to go to Purdue U to have major surgery done. Purdue wanted to neuter him too. Cost would have been a minimum of $2000 (5 yrs ago). I didn't want to go that route because he was my show dog.
He had his urethral prolapse when he was almost a yr old. I did have to have the purse string done one more time on him about 1.5 yrs later but he is 6 now and hasn't had any more problems thank goodness. All that blood is so scary!

dabbing some sugar on the prolapse will often stop any bleeding and will help bring the swelling down. You can also use Neo-synephrine (the stuff for nasal congestion)

pack of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth..
using ice or frozen peas will bring down the erection which should make the bleeding stop.

leave it alone unless it is bleeding

sorry the sugar didn't work for him
usually at least stops the bleeding though.

keep doing it, you can ice him too
if he is bleeding to much.
FYI neutering will not stop it or fix the problem.
