update on katy (my little terrier)

Katy had her bloodwork, urine test and xray today. Turns out she only has one kidney...........no infection. The xray is abnormal though and she is having some kidney failure. The vet thinks it might be from trauma to the kidney, when my bulldog ran over her. She still has no bladder control, but the vet says it may heal itself in a couple weeks. If not we'll have to do more tests (ultrasound is next) Has anyone ever heard of a dog losing control of her bladder because of some kind of trauma to it? Please see my post below entitled "help" for more details.

the name of the med is Deramaxx

that was given to him to reduce the inflammation and stop him from peeing out blood after his surgery

if there is blood in the urine, there is some kind of inflammati

the vet should have prescribed some kind of inflammatory medication. When mine got home from surgery he was peeing out blood so we went to the vet and she prescribed an inflammatory med(i forgot the name, but i'll check it if you need it when i get home) and it cleared up in a day. no more blood. The vet gave us 10 pills but it cleared up after 5 pills so we stopped as per vet order so it won't stress out his kidneys with the other antibiotics he's on to fight the bladder infection.

Re: Yes

Thanks Maryann, I think thats good advice. Because shes not in pain, its tempting to let her behave as usual. But I think I'll keep her crated for a good part of the time, i feel kind of guilty leaving her in there. But it serves two purposes, we can't have her peeing all over the place and the crate forces her to rest, giving her the best chance to heal. I really hope this clears up in the next couple of weeks. This is a busy time for us we are in the middle of moving to another city, so we will be having to find another vet. On the lighter side, Katy is not complaining about being in the crate but my bully is whining in front of the crate, scratching at it and just doesn't want to leave her side! Poor Katy, it must be hard on her nerves to have him hovering over her!

Yes

there could be residual inflammation along the nerves to the bladder after a spinal injury. example- if the injury was bad enough to injure the kidney there was enough pressure to possibly cause a vertebrae to move and injure the nerves to the bladder. The spine is in correct alignment now, but the pressure on the nerves during the accident caused some damage. Therefore, she doesn't have any back pain, but the nerves to the bladder have been traumatized, they take time to repair themselves. This is something that happens gradually.

I don't think I would allow her jump or play rough for the next few weeks.

Re: alanna

thanks Sean, I will check out that website. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Re: Loss of bladder control (long)

HI , thank you for your comments. Could her back be injured, even though she is showing no signs of pain? She's still jumping on couches and stuff. Also the vet said her spine etc. looked perfect on the x rays. I guess her back muscles could be injured and that would not show up in an xray ,but it still seems strange that she is not experiencing pain. The vet said her bloodwork was normal, but they did find a small amount of blood in her urine and her creatine(SP) was a little high indicating some kidney failure. The vet did not prescribe any meds. I just hope this clears up on its own. She woke up soaked in pee again this morning and had an accident in the kitchen yesterday, she also seems really thirsty.

forgot something

regarding the abnormal x-ray of the kidney...you might be able to see an abnormality in the contour of the kidney on plain x-ray if it's large enough. I guess if a large hematoma was present it could be seen. But I wonder if maybe there are some congenital lobulations or compensatory enlargement of that kidney (since she only has one). X-rays afterall, are only interpretation of shadows.

Loss of bladder control (long)

I think there two different things going on here.

Sudden loss of bladder control is usually due to some type of neurologic injury of the spine leading to Incontinence. There is a type of urinary incontinence due to a infection...not able to empty completely or urgency and can't hold it when they have to go (because of the inflammation). THere is also an incontinence called overflow incontince...due to a mechanical obstruction...bladder or urethral stone.

The vet ruled out a bladder infection and if there were fear of stones I think he may have seen crystals. So, after hearing the events of the last few days, I would surmise that her incontinence is of neurologic origin...meaning her back was injured when the EB stumbled over her.

The findings of a solitary kidney I believe is incidental. Animals and Humans can function normally with only one kidney. She just doesn't have a backup. Bloodtests would show if her kidney function is normal.....you can't make a diagnosis of kidney failure simply because the dog only has one kidney. I would be interested in her bloodwork results.

Did the Vet offer any treatment (prednisone) to decrease the inflammation of the spine? I have Doxies along with several friends with Doxies...they get lots of back injuries and then become incontinent....first line of treatment has always been Prednisone.

alanna

Here is a link for kidney conditions. I like this due to some homemade feeding recommendations down the page a ways, but overall great general reading.
Yes a trauma to a kidney can cause it to lose ability to absorb thus eliminating everything, causing excessive urine. The question your vet is trying to answer is this an acute trauma to a chronic kidney failure condition or just an isolated acute trauma kidney condition. Looks like more tests in the short term to compare and see progress if any before making a diagnosis.

Best of Luck to you and Katy.
