Does anyone out there have any idea what is dosage of Synthroid for a 65lb dog and a 90 lb dog. Friend's vet seems to have it awfully low at like 2mcgs a day and then maybe increase to 2X a day. Thyroid is low, coat is horrible, appetites are off....Have not used thyroid med since I had a Sheltie that used it and I thought his dose was higher than that...and he weighed 20 lbs or so. I take like 20 X that much and my thyroid is not horrible, just low but not a ton....and I do not weigh 20 X more than either of those dogs!
Thanks for feedback and approximations .... I know a lot out there are vet techs or even vets.....OHHHHH Elaine.........:) L

'thyroid meds
Thats not something to play with. I'm on it my self and so was Rocky. It goes by your test results. You can over medicate a dog really easily. If your questioning the does why not talk to the vet. The dog probably need it for a long time. It will take time to build up in the system just like it does in humans. I' m on 3 grains of my medication that doesn't mean someone else my same weight would take the same amount. It would be based on the blood work which would tell you how low the thyroid function is and then the right does would be prescribed. I really suggest you talk to the vet about this.

Thanks for the feedback!!!!...
The girl is not too sure of her vet and she, the vet, didn't seem to comfortable w/ the thyroid dosage. Mine goes in mcgs...and I don't know how that translates into 'grains'. My doctor said that the exact number for thyroid was actually rather random in that it is based on average that most people fall into but for me what is low normal my be low for me so she put me on meds. She didn't indicate thyroid meds or numbers were an exact science so I had no idea how to counsel her so I turned to, where else, the medical board!!!

Thyroid med dose
I agree with previous about dosage depending on bloodwork numbers. Years ago my almost 12 year old developed the seasonal alopecia, so of course we went for thyroid testing. Vet said she was borderline low and started her on low dose of soloxine, which didn't do anything for the alopecia. Then her daughter had heats that were 13 mo. apart, so I decided to re-do the mother's test and also have daughter's sent to Dr. Jean Dodd's, who is known for her expertise in thyroid. I spoke to Dr. Dodds, and she said that low normal was still normal and no medication was required, and the other was normal...that was just her cycle. So neither required the medication. You might suggest that your friend's vet contact her. All vets know who she is, and her information is readily available by internet search. Good luck!
Thanks Micki
Will pass along the advice!
