Tear Stains

I know tear stains have been discussed to death, but I have a new problem. We moved from city water to well water about 1 1/2 years ago. I am having trouble with red staining on feet, faces, etc. One dog actually has a red head at this point. Only some dogs, not all are affected. Did not have this before. Someone told me probably well water in our area. Question is, I am going to have filter installed. Should I get a whole house filtration system or a whole house water softener system? I know the difference, I am assuming the filtration system would filter out minerals that may cause the red stains. Anyone know or have experience with this? We do have very "hard" water.

It's probably caused from the minerals in the water

So, I would probably choose a filtration system. I know when we had well water years ago, we had a lot of iron in our water and couldn't wash our whites in the well water without them becoming dingy.
