I was playing with my extremely energetic bulldog, Tank, yesterday and noticed the tip of his nose is missing a little piece. I'm guessing he was wrestling around with our other dogs - a boxer and pekingese (the peke is the boss!) and the peke may have bitten or scratched him. His nos has also been very dry. We just took him to the vet for shots and checkups and they said he was perfectly normal - they would like for him to lose some weight - but totally healthy. I read in a bulldog magazine to help keep the pads of his feet soft, they suggested putting a little petroleum jelly on them...this works great for his big 'ol feet. We thought since it works so well on his feet, would it help make his nose softer? Is his nose supposed to have that rough feel to it? Any suggestions? Thanks so much!!
Re: Dry nose
Thank you so much for your response! We have been using Vasoline, and I think we may try Vitamin E...that seems to be another popular remedy! I'm only going to give it a few more days, and if I don't notice a change, he will be going back to the vet! Thanks again so much!!!
LOVE your site!!!!

Thank you so much for your response! We have been using Vasoline, but Tank just tries to eat it...it looks like he's trying to bite his nose!
I think I will give some Vitamin E a try...that seems to be the most popular! Thanks again!!!

Dry nose
Hi! If his nose is just dry, vaseline can work fine - but if it's crusty (e.g. a little piece/pieces seem to flake off) then he may have a condition where he produces a lot of keratonin in addition to being just dry. We had that problem with our male and a vet finally prescribed KeraSolv Gel (we write about it on our non-commercial blog, www.TheBestBulldog.com) - it is kind of like a low grade exfoliant so the crusty bits flake off. Also, I like it because it is very fast-drying, so they don't try to voraciously lick it off.

A few suggestions...
Some use a Vitamin E (oil) capsule which they break open on the nose and gently rub in...its good for any skin.

Some use Vaseline and rub that in, but if you use too much the dog will rub his nose on any fabric including your couch or clothes.
Some use Bag Balm (lanolin)which is used same as Vaseline...rub in small amount, weekly in summer/warm months.
And some just rub the nose after the bath, using a nubby terry towel, which will "sand off" some of the dried top layer of skin. Do NOT pick as you can chip off enough to cause bleeding.
