for yeast.
Foster kid is on antibiotics for ear surgeries for about 2 mths now.
A week ago he started spinning around on his butt and licking air. I couldn't see issue, so while at vet for ear, he looked at tail. Raw and red.
I am using maleseb pledgletts to clean several times a day. Then, twice a day I use the ear med-either animax or ottomax cream. Poor baby just sits and spins until I scratch around the area. It distracts him to the point he forgets to potty when we go outside.
Too tight to get a cotton ball up there-I have to use the bottle tip or a finger. It doen NOT STINK like yeast.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I had this years ago with a Bully Boy and...
the vet finally had to do surgery and close the tail pocket off with a skin flap (it was a deep cavern) and then made a 'pseudo-tail' with the flap and it looked just like he had a tail there. It was really bad prior to this...he was in agony and wouldn't let me near it to clean or anything.

He never had a problem again.

bum scooting
My bully has had similar problems, she has a pocket tail and it is usually a combination between the tail needing to be cleaned, and her anal glands to be expressed. You can obviously do both yourself. I clean her tail with antibacterial soap and a baby wipe, then dry and use ottomax, I usually clean every week or so. As far as her anal glands I do whenever she is rubbing her bum and licking in the air. You can insert one finger to the first joint and feel the glands (if they are full) around 5 and 7 o'clock. If they need to be done you can feel the lump and once you gently squeeze from inside and out you will defintely smell it too. If you feel to uneasy to try for the first time, I took mine to the vet and she showed me how to do it, so now I do it on my own.

Re; spinning licking!
Thanks guys! I will probably take her in for vet check. She just had glands done about three weeks ago but...her ears look normal, nice and clean, vag looks normal but im not a vet. I know she is uncomfortable and it just kills me! She was diagnosed with Hemivertebrae but it was determined to not be messing with her spinal cord. I'm wondering if she is in pain? How can you tell? Aside from the obvious I mean. She has had a hip that goes in and out and when it is out I know what her pain is. She screams and actually cries. But could she be in another form of pain?

No tail but still spins and licks!
I have a six year old who we had her tail amputated when she was a baby because it was growing wrong and the constant spinning and rubbing. Well...here we are years later and she can't get relief. Constant itching rubbing scratching anything she can get her hind end on. Spinning on the floor licking the air. She doesnt have fleas and I can't seem to see anywhere she is irritated! So frustrated I feel soo bad for her! I do give her Benadryl occasionally but I can't give all the time!

I started washing Sophie's pocket once a week
I use warm soapy water and wash it out really well. Then I get it totally dry and leave it alone. She hasn't had nearly such an itchy butt for a while now! Less is more sometimes:-)

I was going to suggest checking ears too.
She could also have a vaginal yeast infection or similar that is ongoing and causes itching.

if the benedryl helps, you can give it daily..
try a small dose (one pink pill) daily and then ease off to every other day to maintain. You can buy it generic at costco for really cheap. I think it's 400 pills for $3 or $4. It's a Kirkland brand and it's the same as Benedryl.

Have you had the vet check her tail area to make sure it healed properly? What about her anal sacks? Could they be bothering her?
My Roxy will spin and turn when her ear is bothering her. Have you checked her ears?

I agree
I have dogs with tail pockets... I NEVER touch them and have never had a problem. I pull out dead hair but thats it!

I just use toilet paper to wipe tails and then use foot powder
what ever is on sale..This is a nightly routine-not that they have tail problems-I would do this with our mamma dog and the girls would watch and then all of a sudden wouldn't go to bed until they had their bums powdered too!! Funny girls..
Just keep dry-nothing wet...
Good luck

i agree, when cleaning you take the good out along with the bad
after a bath i pack with cotton balls, count how many are stuffed in and count how many taken out and be done. I do check it in a day to make sure nothing is brewing and leave it alone.

stop everything you are doing
no maleseb and no ear meds! Clean the tail well with warm water and soap in the show. Then dry really well with dry soft cloth. And leave it be...IMO the tail is not getting better becaue its staying moist..ottomax may be killing off yeast but is still not doing the job in an area that is warm and moist- which is where yeast and bacteria grow..
the true key to tails is to keep them clean and dry!
I think too many people are doing way to much on tails.
We get alot of dogs in rescue who have lived outside, never had baths, are neglectd etc and they come in with smelly tails..BUT often no problems. Thats because no one is constantly there wiping thier butt with Maleseb, or baby wipes etc..
Roland is 6 months old and i have only cleand his tail pocket once since i have had him. Its often red stained uder there...but that dosnt always signify yeast..its also simlar to a tear stain..
he has had no isuess
since i have backed off Mias tail..she also has not had any isues. Her tail gets cleand once a week during her bath, thats it now..

Maybe it's his anal glands
I really think you are cleaning too often. Just keep it dry and maybe use some diaper rash cream.

My mother has this with her Bulldog
so I go over twice a day and clean with baby wipes. First I clean the pocket out really well then once more with Maleseb Wipes. She was really raw when we first discovered the problem so I cleaned well (That was a battle because it was raw) and then I used generic Mono-stat which is an anti fungal. I treated twice a day for about 10 days and it was easy to insert into the tail pocket because it comes with the applicator. Now that we have it under control we can keep it clean and healthy with the Maleseb wipes. (They are on sale at Amazon.com for $10.00 " GREAT buy")Good luck and stay on it. In the heat of the summer it doesn't take long for it to start bothering them.

wait before.....
you make it anymore moist.....if your having difficulty getting into the pocket by adding all these creams your making it to moist......a good rule of thumb is...if its wet keep it dry if its dry keep it moist.....
try no more creams for two days...but get some gold bond powder and get it up their to dry that tail pocket out....it if smells rub only a little cream antibotic panlog is my favorite around the outside of the tail hole not inside where your trying to dry it out....

Happened to Stella used Animax
used it twice a day for 10 days. What we did was wipe with a baby wipe to clean use the animax. Again at night wipe with a baby wipe and apply animax. Animax is great stuff but it is an antibiotic so you have to use it like one. It is also messy so you have to clean the old stuff out. Stella has somewhat of a tight tail so I filled a syringe with animax and shot it up there. This works well but tends to waste soem of the cream.
