Surgery Thursday - Cherry Eye - To Cut or not to Cut

Hello All

Hate to beat this topic to death, as I've read lots of discussions about it here amongst other places. However my Bella gets her Surgery this Thursday and need to make a decision about to cut or not.

My doctor will do either but highly recommends giving it a chance first with the pocket/stitch.

However her Cherry has been out for over 3 weeks now and is a decent size. I question if it will stay down, and if it does how it will even look. I saw some pictures where it staying down wasn't exactly what I pictured. I thought it would look like her eye did before. Also, I'm not sure how I would react if I paid the 500 and have it pop out like 2 days later (the repeats are like half price but that's besides the point in my mind)

So, I thought I would check back one more time on this subject to see how people feel and they can give me their personal experience - like still going strong X years etc.

Does anybody have a picture of theirs with it cut? I'm curious how that looks versus the stitching.

My baby is right around 5.5 months and will be getting spaying done too, so she'll be under either way.

I'm nervous about the whole thing, and even making a choice. To make matters worse the other side of her eye has been increasing red and swollen since yesterday (hoping it's allergies since she's been out a lot more but we shall see)

Bella Looking Much Better

I wanted to let all know that Bella is looking much better, it's still a bit swollen, but took her in to have the vet check it out and she said it's looking great for how long it's been.

Crossing my fingers, that it's in there for good.

Thanks - now to get her to eat - any tips

Thanks.

Her eye looks a little more painful today, but she has it open like all the way - still in a daze though.

She has ate next to nothing since I brought her home last night and she will only really drink water from my fingers or ice cubes.. I also found a little vomit in her pen last night.

If she doesn't eat/drink anymore by tomorrow I think I'll give the vet a call. Acting fairly normal minus super groggy and no appetite etc.

That's about right for the recouperation time for the eye.  I had to put med in too.  You will be surprised.  I had my two puppies spayed and neutered two days ago and they didn't even need the pain med the morning after the surgery.  I did give it to them though, but they were fine without it on the third day.

Update

Everyone with the good advice will prob laugh, but my wife and I went in sold on the cut, and the vet talked us out of it.

I was able to get the spaying and tuck surgery done for the same price I was quoted for just the tuck surgery so we thought we would give it one try.

If it doesn't work out, then I'll def go with the cut next time.

Bella is really out of it, but doing as good as expected. I'm told she was snoring before they even started to put her under (not surprised as she takes after me)

The eye looks pretty swollen and do see a little of something, that looks sorta like a Cherry still - however I'm thinking pleasant thoughts and hoping it's swelling etc. My vet said it should be back to normal in 10-15 days, so I'm confused based upon some of the other stories of recovery.

I only have some sort of ointment to put on her eye 3 times a day, and some pain meds - both for only 5 days. What did others need to do?

I'll try to get some pics.. although at the moment it's not looking really good as I would hope if I had somebody poking around my eye.

Vet said they've seen about 80-90% success rate with their procedure - cross your fingers.

by the time they realize

what is going on its over. So no time to really move the head and fidget.

Re: moving head

I have watched this procedure...and the procedure itself only takes a few seconds...the most time is in instilling the drops and opening the sterile blade. The vet is very experienced, so it's over before the pup knows it! Very fast, very neat...no after effects, and aftercare was simply to use Genteal drops. I was amazed!

moving head

I understand that the procedure is quick but still not sure how they keep the head still enough not to injure the eye, even just a scratch... has anyone had that happen?

they use a local eye drop

like lidocaine for the eye. then they clamp the gland with surgical hemostats and cut out.

it takes less then 2 minutes!

my only dog with dry eye had his tucked

So to me the risk of dry eye from a snip in not a risk at all. The risk to me is loosing the dog from putting them under.

Dry eye...

My vet see many bulldogs. He did a study regarding removal of the gland and dry eye. He said that NO dogs came back with dry eye.

He snipped my Olivia's glands about 3 1/2 years ago. Her eyes are beautiful and no dry eye.

There is simply some redness in the corner of the eye.

My vet gave me some antibiotic ointment. The eye looked perfectly normal 2 or 3 days later.

GO FOR THE SNIP!

Operated 3 times in 5 months

We were never told about the snipping option by the vet -- he kept saying we had to redo it.

The first was a bad left eye. We wanted to wait until she was ready to be spayed and then felt we couldn't wait for the second one. (August/September)

So 2 weeks or so after we did this, the right one popped out. Got that tucked and they added an extra stitch to the first one. (late September)

Didn't cure it. Left one repopped in December. It's finally holding.

You can still see the pink but we had been so afraid of the snipping and dry eye.

If I knew then what I know now (from reading this board), I would have snipped right away.

FWIW, I was told at Bullyfest that left normally goes bad before right for some reason.

Good luck.

so interesting...

How does the vet snip it out without the dog being sedated? How do they keep the dog still enough not to injure the eye? Very interesting...

I've had experience with both - I prefer snip

My first Bulldog Rocky got cherry eye shortly after we got him at about 4 months old. Called breeder and she strongly suggested taking him to her Bulldog vet as they did snip procedure. So that's what we did. We were there less that 1/2 hour and when we left you would never have known he had anything done. He lived to be 10 years old and we never saw any more issues with this eye than with his other one.
We recently got a new puppy Harley. The night before we were scheduled to pick him up breeder called to say he had developed cherry eye. We opted to get him and take him to our vet. This time we opted for the pocket surgery as this is what our vet said was best. It has been eight weeks since surgery and we are very dissapointed at what his eye looks like. We are still hoping for improvement but have been told this might be what it will always be. If we had known how much more recovery and that the result would be a eye that always looks a bit swollen we would definately choose snip.

Thanks for the thoughts so far

Thanks for the thoughts so far, I'm interested to hear any more stories.

She will be put under for her spaying no matter what, so I could do the tuck easy enough then. However I want do what's going to give me the best chance of not having a recurring problem, plus I do not want to do it multiple times and be out 800-900 bucks only to snip it anyways.

Plus I would like to go the route that's the most appealing, she's not a show dog but I do tend to focus on the negatives and know I would be driven crazy if it looks odd.

What does an eye after a snip look like?

my experience with cherry eye

I have a specialist that does my dogs.  There is always a little different look to the eye after the cherry eye is done and from Vicky's pictures it looks relatively the same.  If the dog has a black ring around the eye you seems to notice it more. The conjuntiva comes into the eye just a tiny, tiny, bit.   I have had four dogs done with Cherry eye.  All have had the pocket made to put the gland back in place, and i NEVER had one come out again.  My vet won't charge me again if it does anyway.  Spike had his cherry eye along time, he was about 10 weeks old when it popped out and then he had surgery for his throat when he was four months old and that's when his cherry eye was done.  It was very big.th_loris022.jpgth_loris022.jpgth_loris022.jpgsorry I have no idea how to do this picture thing  these are prior to his surgery

we don't have the cherry eye problem, however

if there is an issue that needs repair, or may need repair in the future, i would think best to do it while she's under anyway...

SNIP,

They dont have to be put under, so you take that chance of loosing them out of the picture.

Tucking, they are put under and it's risky.

Definitely to the snip...

Then you'll never have to worry about it popping out again and it will not have a bulge or redness like the pictures I've seen.

My Olivia had both of hers snipped out. Her eyes are beautiful. She's a champion show dog. She never had a problem with dry eye as some will tell you may occur.

Snip! For sure.
