Stud dog

Do stud dogs lose potency as they age fathering smaller litters? If a dog usually fathered 8 or more puppies and now he doesn't father as many, could it be age or technique? AI technique that is.

At what age can a male Bulldog be bred, or have sperm gathered? What tests should a responsible person have done on a Bulldog being considered for breeding?

Is DNA to be registered with the AKC?

I know most of these answers are on the site, but I'd like an overview from others to mention things not down in black and white, of what I could expect, even if my dogs just supply sperm, gathered by a Vet.

Stud dogs lose potency as they age, but when you consider the massive numbers of sperm released, it isn't the biggest factor in sire-ing a litter. My 9 y/o old male was recently collected for evaluation and freezing, the Tech gave up counting after 2 Billion, but about 40% of the sperm weren't viable due to proximal head drop - something that happens with age to a stud. Still he had enough for the 4 unit minimum to be frozen, if he were younger and there weren't the non-vialble sperm, he would have supplied 11 breeding units.
Litter size is determined by the number of eggs the female releases, timing, AI technique, the bitch's health (the fetus' environment) and other things not relating to the stud.

Around 7-8 months of age the male's sperm has some viability and could be evaluated. As to tests, the normal run of health tests, some of which can't be done until age 2 years or older, others can be done younger; eye CERF, OFA Cardio, Patellas, Trachea size, Thyroid, ATTS temperament testing and evaluation as to how well the dog conforms to the breed Standard.

By AKC rules any dog that sires 2 or more litters a year and more than 6 in his lifetime must have DNA sample checked and a number on file with AKC.

I think the Stud dog owner has a responsibility towards the breed to not use their dog indiscriminately on any and every bitch. The bitch must have Breed type, good health and temperament and conscientious owners too.

Thank you

Good information. I wouldn't breed to a bitch that didn't make the best pups I could, with the combo of dogs. No Bullweilers on anything like that. Thanks again, I'm learning more and more, I need to learn people, as to judge others true intent inregards to the breeding, pups, and placement. That's why I ask, cause there are a lot of things you need to learn from others that know. I need to do some more reading on the testing and standards.
