Well Mason's staph infection looks like its back again. Mild but back again after meds from the vet. I think that I am going to see if it goes away over the next few weeks and if not as much as I like the food he is on because he is doing so well on it, I think I will have to change. I think he might be allergic to something in it.
I am thinking of changing him to taste of the wild. He eats chicken soup for the pet lovers soul large breed puppy right now. However; I don't see a large breed puppy brand and see all the types can be fed to puppies. I am wondering what brand people are feeding there pups and what results they are getting? I am looking at the Praire kind.
dont rush to get him vaccines......
alot of problems are caused by vaccines...he has also been on antibotics.....first off i would add some yogurt and probitics to his diet to get the good bacteria going...alot was destroyed with the antibotics..... give his system time to build up a a good immune system.....go to grain free food or even better a raw diet....
hope this helps a little

I used to feed TOTW
But I stopped because my girl with allergies started having ear infections and IDC's. I'm trying Nature's Variety Venison right now and she seems a little better but, it's too early to tell if this food will work for her or not.

I've heard that Simplicef (antibiotic) works well for staph infections.

answer to questions
He was on meds for cold. the vet said it should clear up the infection. I am not changing anything until I take him back to the vet in 2 weeks for his kennel cough vaccine. I don't have pictures cause for some reason I can't seem to post on here after signing up to post pictures a few times...they are not black spots though. Red and light pink, the look a lot like pimples. I like the idea about having the vet look further into the staph infection to see exactly what it is and what is causeing it. he is doing really well right now except for his infection, its not bad but still I want it taken care of.

TOTW - Taste of the Wild.
he is eatting Chicken Soup for the pet lovers soul - Large breed puppy..here is what's in it
Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, white rice, oatmeal, millet, potatoes, egg product, tomato pomace, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), duck, salmon, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, salmon oil (source of DHA), choline chloride, dried chicory root, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, dried fermentation products of Enterococcus faecieum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum, dried Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract, vitamin E Supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
Thanks

My guys are both on TOTW and...
they have beautiful coats, no tear stains, firm poops, what more could you ask for. We use the Pacific Stream.

Agree...
if the food tolerance issue is in question, and changing it on a healthy dog is problematic enough, you will want to get rid of the staph infection FIRST. Doing a C&S (culture and sensitivity test which takes about 7-10 days to get results from) will define what exactly the infection is, and what medication or medications are best for this particular infection...it can end up saving you time and frustration of trial-n-error in figuring out where the problem lies.

Re: Staph infection back again :( - TASTE OF THE WILD QUESTION
Does the food you are feeding contain grains? Sometimes that is what causes the allergies.
After having an allergic dog and dealing with skin issues for years I learned from his dermatologist that you want to use a single source protein. I have always fed my dogs Natural Balance Duck and Potato, and they did well on that. The puppy that I currently have could not tolerate the Duck, I assume, because it gave him very soft stools. I have since switched to Natural Balance Fish and Potato with very good results. It may take you trial and error to find the food that works the best for your dog.

Meds
I am wondering if you did a culture on the staph infection?
Tessie had one and we had her on cephalexin for 2 months of and on because realizing we needed to do a staph culture to find the right medication to kick the staph infection out of her system.

My dogs eat Wellness Core Low Fat....
but it is not for puppies under 1 year. My Friday (Cocker Spaniel) has staph infections and she is doing very well on Core along with her Staph Lystate injections. Amazingly well I must say!

Funny you should mention Prairie......this past weekend I was out with a friend and she needed to get food for her bulldog who is allergic to so many things you find in dog food. We actually encountered a Prairie salesperson who helped us. My friend picked out the venison and her bully is doing very well on it. No major allergy attacks immediately after eating so we are hoping that we eliminated her food problem. Seems like a good food....
Good Luck!
