Would like to have any information on split heats in a bulldog bitch. I have heard of them, but have no personal experience with them. Any information you can provide will be very welcome.

so I know for sure and can get on top of it before it gets too serious. These guys surely can give us worry fits! I appreciate all the help and information-you all are great!

Is there any odor to the discharge? Sometimes the heat can last 3-4 weeks, it might be worth a trip to the vet for a culture. Has she had this before? A split cycle. Did she bleed and then stop and then start again in a couple of weeks?

Her bleeding has become very thick and dark and has slowed to almost nothing, but not yet stopped. She is three years old. Can each heat cycle be different in one bitch? I know she is a slow maturer-body wise-so maybe this is a normal condition for her now she is grown? She is into her 4th week of heat.

My girl had open pyo on her first heat cycle that was incorrectly diagnosed as a bladder infection initially because the discharge had no odor and she had no fever. We also thought she could just be having a split heat, because it would stop for several days and then start again. Over the course of a few weeks, the discharge went from blood-tinged mucous to a watery, "coffee with milk" color (this is when it started to develop an odor), to a gooey, gelatinous red (kind of like condensed tomato soup right out of the can). Sorry, I know that's gross--but it's the best way to describe it .
One morning she was vomiting and had pale gums (still no fever), but the only consistent symptom through the whole thing was lethargy.

My female had a split cycle. She would go into heat and then about 4-6 weeks later have another cycle. I tried to breed her once, but she reabsorbed the pups, I had her spayed. The two cycles were a nightmare for me. Good luck.

to the discharge. She has not had this before. She has never completely stopped in this heat. Continuous dripping to an extent from very little to a bit more. Temp normal, respiration normal, eating and drinking normal and defecating normally.

I just went thru the same thing with my 1 year old and was told not to worry if there was no odor but she ended up with a white blood count twice what it should have been and a emergency spay because she had pyo and a 3 lb. uterus.

I agree. Keep a close eye on her.

It's something to be aware of, anyway.

Open pyo
Could be an open pyometria...would definately do some more vet work.

Thank you all for your information. It is very helpful.
I will be checking with my vet again shortly.
