Spinal Bifida

Does anyone know anything about a condition in humans called spinal bifida, but in bulldogs called tether or teder?

The puppy, I am told, can not hold it bowels or bladder (incontience) but able to ambulate and play. There are no outward signs, but I am told this four month puppy has this medical problem; but there are no ambulation issues? I am wondering how it would be diagnosed?

Is there a cure or is this a red flag for long term medical problems? I have never heard of it, and I can not locate it when I google.

Thanks,
Anne

Hi Anne. A few of us have Spina Bifida bullies.

You have come to the right place to learn about this issue. I have a 9 month old female with SB and she is totally incontinent, but ambulates just fine:-) I keep a diaper on her at night and keep her eating a good diet, and she has little problem besides the bowels and bladder. It is a lot of work, you have to keep their bottoms very clean or they will get urinary tract infections, but it isn't hard to keep these dogs any differently than you would a non SB bully.

Feel free to email me privately for more info.

If the puppy has SB,

And it affects both the bladder and bowels, then they will not squat to pee or poo, everything will just come out. The pee will just leak out as they walk, same with the stool. Urine is alot harder to deal with, but the stool, if you keep it firm with diet and feed them on schedule, it can be handled very easily. I feed mine then let them out to play or take them for a walk about 20-25 minutes after they eat, the excercise empties their bowels, and they are clean until the next meal. But the ones that have no control over their bladders, they wear diapers.

He very well may have spina bifida,

I am not saying it is guaranteed, but alot of times they go hand in hand. Maybe get an x-ray for him.

Re: Spinal Bifida

I have been trying to figure out this out? With a puppy, they ususally pee without notice, does this mean the urine just drains out, or do they squat and pee? Also with their bowels, does the stool just drain out?
Thanks,
Anne

max

I have the little bully that was diagnosed with hydrocephalus...but now they say he may not have it ...but anyway...I am having trouble with potty training him....it seems like he goes every 15 to 30 min. his sister(ellie mae) is doing good. I have a pen that is 8ft by 8 ft that they stay in at night and when we are working and he goes in it all the time. I put him in his crate one night and he wet in it all night(it was soaked)
I have been thinking he is just drinking too much but now im wondering if he may have spina bifida. He has had several vet visits and it has not been mentioned.......maybe im just grasping at straws....trying to explain his lack of holding power

Depending on the severity.

They could have weak back legs, or they could have no control over their bladder, or no control over the bowels, or they could have no control over their bladder and bowels, or have all three. Some puppies can control their urine but not their bowels. They usually have a dimple on their back above their tail.

symptoms?

Could someone please explain the symptoms of spina bifida? How do you know if your puppy has this?
Thanks

Also,

Because they have spina bifida does not mean they will have any problems with their legs, some of them do and some don't.I have two with very strong legs, and one that had very weak legs, but she has gotten much stronger, although her legs will never be normal. As far as long term issues, the puppy will never gain control of her bladder or bowels if she has no control right now, but if her legs work fine, they probably always will.

Spina bifida babies,

As you can see in my pics below I have a pack of spina bifida babies..lol

There is no cure for them, but they can live a normal life. Some wear diapers and some people leave them diaperless, depending on their level of incontinence. There are few people here that have dogs with spina bifida, and we would all be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
