Kathy, Thanks for your kind words. I did't know at the time it was too much as I had never tubed a puppy.... I can't give this little baby to rescue. I keep thinking he would be better off with me until I find a home for him. This is the only home he has known. Linda

Hi Linda,
Sorry about your litter so sad. I quess you realize the vet made a big mistake tubing with an amout equal to your pups weight. As far as the spina bifida puppy contact your local bulldog rescue, they will probaby be able to find someone that will take him.

I have a spina bifida girl. No reason to put the puppy down, there are folks who will take him. Can you tell us a little about him on this other forum please? Age, is he continent or not, can he walk, etc.

I am the owner/breeder. I initially had a litter of 6 pups born on Father's Day. I couldn't find a vet that would do an emergency c-section. FINALLY after calling a few breeders, I found a vet 1 hour away. Since it was Father's Day, she asked that I leave the pups for her to look after. Why, I don't know. Later that evening, I returned to pick up the pups. They were in an incubator and their mouths were laying in what looked like milk. I asked the vet what was going on and was informed they had been tubed between 5-7oz of formula. All but one died within a few days. Two died during the one hour trip home. I have one left. He is a Champion Cherokee sired pup, and VERY cute! HUGE rope. I live in Indiana and have never been in this situation before. Any suggestions??? Linda

His legs will most likely get stronger as he grows. One of my girls could barely walk, then she walked on her hocks, and eventually got up on her feet. If his stool gets firmer his muscles will get it out. Does he leak urine aswell, or just stool? I give my dogs a vet diet, it may not be the best, but it keeps the stool very firm, then I just have a nugget to pick up, if you wanted to try soem for your pup, go to your vet and pick up a small bag of Iams low residue. Here a small bag, like 6 pounds is $20, so there it would be cheaper. Please join the SBbullies group, there are alot of people there to help, and also to see if we can find him a home. Where are you located?
Please email me, I would like to find out a little info about the baby.
Thanks!

You spayed your bitch after the first one....are you using the same stud line or bitch line (a related female) in this current pup? If so, it is from that particular line, maybe wasn't from your bitch of the first litter. I would check the specific lineage and see if there is any one line that was in both pups, then go from there....
Now, I am not advocating spaying and neutering every dog or bitch in those lines! Just thought that if it is genetic, you could trace the breeding's to find the connection.
Again, I do wish you the best with your boy. I wish I had a placce for another SB puppy but I don't right now:-( I bet your boy is darling:-)

Thanks SO much for at least the hope that he may walk better with time. I have had one SB baby before. Different girl, different sire. Girl's first litter. I had the girl spayed right after I discovered that the pup was SB. Several years later, bam- again. It could be genetic, but this has never happened to this pair before. Should I STILL have her spayed???? Thanks for all the information/advise that you all have been willing to share. I never go to the vet anymore without bouncing a problem off this forum. Thanks. Linda

Most likely his legs will strengthen with time. Isabella, my SB girl, had the same flipper walk, but she got very strong once away from mom and sibs and was moving on her own more. Give it time, someone will love your boy and give him a forever home.
As for what went wrong, SB is most likely genetic. There is a research project ongoing that is trying to locate a genetic marker for SB and then they will know if it IS indeed genetic. If so, either your bitch or the dog is a carrier of it, and that line should hopefully not be bred again...your choice but you run teh risk of producing more SB in that line.
Best of luck to you and your boy, and don't give up on him yet....he will find that special home.

I have had many emails about this baby. He is on my website www.barristerbulldogs.com under "available puppies". Davey-Boy Smith. Davey-Boy will be 6 weeks old this Sunday. He walks like he was swim flippers on his feet. They just plop, but he does get around. He hasn't has a fully formed bm, they are just soft, but I can express his poop when I squeeze his butt. He has an incredible pedigree. I just don't know what went wrong. Linda
