some skin issues with Mia (sort of long)

I am having some issues with Mias skin and coat. In January i started her on a new food in order to get her eating better so she could gain weight and be shown again. She was on TOTW but refused to eat it. So then i went and got her Nutra Nugget Lamb and Rice from Costco, cheap but decent and she LOVES it. She has gained a little over 10 pounds and looks more like a Bully than a Pit Bull now.

BUT since this change we have huge amounts of hair loss (more than normal shedding) dry flaky skin, hot spots on the face and neck, dull, dry, brittle coat, and a very yeasty smell to her body. When we pet her our hands smell like something i cant describe other than GROSS! Her eyes are gunking up daily with green discharge.

As well, we experience a false pregnancy EVERY TIME she goes into heat. So in Jan she had her heat cycle, got teets with some milky dischage, vulva stays swollen and personality changes that make you think she is prego. So in March she nested, always does around day 63. We go through the whole range of motions and what not. Pamper her, give her stuffies to mother etc....then she blows her coat pretent post whelp..which is also what i thought could be going on..

so any suggestions on suppliments to give her or help with these issues?

We had been using K9 show stopper but had to stop it because of the higher fat content and related GI disturbances. I did some blood testing panels a while back- thyroid was in the 6's and everything else was normal. All of her issues keep leading me to think Tyroid and it has been suggested by a few Bulldoggers to go ahead and put her on Thyroid meds but vet wont give it to me because he says that theses people dont know what they are talking about. Should I have another thyroid panel done? Her hair loss is down the spine, side, face and neck..

Thanks for any help..

One of my shar-pei smelled terrible too.  Change the food.  I now swear by California Natural Herring.  All their coats are great, ear, nose ropes, they are soft and shiny.  The best thing I ever did!

If I were you I'd go back to grain free

maybe give EVO a shot, or natural balance. Since you seem be having issues since switching from a grain free food. My dogs LOVED the evo, they were gaining TOO MUCH weight on it though haha!

Same issues

Hi Rhiann, I had skin issues with the food I was feeding and switched to TOTW salmon. Some of my dogs love it but the one I show does not. If I cook some ground turkey and mix a little in he eats it. In just a month their coats and skin are really shiny and nice. All the red spots have cleared up. There is a supplement called missing link that you can add to the food that helped also but I stopped that when I switched to TOTW. I don't know for sure but have you thought about a different hormone issue other than thyroid? I don't know if they test for these or not. I had a friend whose dog done this after whelping and the vet said it was hormones and gave her prednisone for a short time and it cleared uip. Hope you get some use out of some of this.

try kirkland food

i know many who feed it and the dogs do great.

She is missing something in her diet, you might try some olive oil or salmon oil and see if it helps.

At least she is fat,

Sorry i had to

Hi Rhiann--Sorry to hear of Mia's coat probs. I'm by no means an expert but you helped me so much when I was just getting started with my dog I hope I can return the favor. Moli went through some coat issues-losing patches of fur, but nothing with a funny smell coming from her (other than the normal dog smell happy.gif ) Hasn't gone through a false preg. either, so these things may not apply.
We are on thyroid meds for now, but her numbers were much lower than Mia's when she was tested. We also switched to grain free food. We use TOTW (change the variety each time)or Natural Balance. Doesn't always act like she's thrilled with it, but does eventually eat it. The Vet had us try Purina HA food but that didn't seem to help much. Also gave a probiotic capsule and/or yogurt daily in addition to a fish oil and Vitamin E capsule. Trying to build up her immune system--working from the inside out as her breeder said. We used the EQyss products--shampoo, MicroTek spray, and MegaTek Rebuilder working from the outside.
Have been able to back off on some of these things for now. Her coat is looking pretty good although she does have a couple of spots on her back legs where she had a huge lump develop (I think the vet called it a nic granuloma (sp?))and the hair fell out and has still to fill back in completely. I still apply the rebulider there.
Glad you've been able to get some weight back on her. Maybe you can try some other foods and see if she'll eat them. We give Lilli Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach (it's salmon based) and her coat looks pretty good. I know Moli's breeder had one that she had a hard time finding a food that she'd eat to get some weight put on her.
Good luck.
