Soft Pallate Surgery Question

Roxy will be going to Washington State University this coming week for some surgery to help with her chronic UTI's. At the same time, the vet would like our permission to trim her soft pallate. My normal bulldog vet feels this is a good idea. They do it with a laser & it cauterizes at the same time. She said it would help with her breathing & heat tolerance. She will already be under anesthesia for the other surgery.

I would appreciate anyone's opinion, especially people who have had this procedure done on their bully. Does it change their breathing or snoring? Has it helped other people's bullys?

I have, lots of them I bet its her larynx area, get vet to check

I am not sure what you can do about it though, probably nothing.

I would only do it if it was a must because

in my experience of seeing dogs who have had it done, many have problems with their larynx area as a result.

Ela1ne --- Have you

ever heard of a dog worse after the surgery?

The reason we had it done is she will hock white foam when running after a ball, when she reaches down to pick it up. It's just like someone spitting a loogey. Other then that she was normal! The palette surgery didn't help this at all. She doesn't puke up food or water and doesn't really fit the Mega Esophagus symptoms. When she was a year old she had to have CCL surgery and they used an 8 tube on her. When she had this surgery at 2 1/2 they could barely get a tube down her. My vet said she is really small back in that area of her her throat and since her palette is so thick there is just not much room. She wasn't a heavey breather, not a heavy panter and very quiet. I know what a bad palette dog sounds like....you can hear then coming a ring away at a show.

It reallys just sucked, she had 6 points and was just getting back into the ring from the knee surgery. Infact she had won a hugh open bitch class her 2nd day out after her come back. We had the palette done when she got entropian in one eye so of course we had her spayed at the same time.

She is really doing well and even though she sounds like a freight train when she's excited and companies over, she is usually quiet when she is settled and relaxed. I rehomed her with my sister, who loves her dearly and she is happy being a spoilt only child.

Sorry to hear this, about the poor results on your bitch.

And I'm sure you know this is not the customary response but it doesn't help your little one's QOL any. Hope this summer isn't too hard on her. happy.gif

I'd have it done ..... BUT it doesn't always

come out with the results you expect. I had horrible results on a bitch I had done.

She sounds much worse after the surgery then before. I was honestly very disappointed with the results. She didn't really have much trouble breathing...was very quiet even when it was hot. I showed her for 2 years and she never panted, even in 80+ degree weather.

Then I had the surgery done (per vet advice) and she is so loud now you have to put her up or you can't have a conversation with company. It's just a shame. I have a lot of guilt putting her through the surgery and we ended up doing it twice. I was worried there was scar tissue that had formed that was causing her to be so noisey or someother problem. According to the vet her palatte was very thick and very long, down into her throat. He took off 1 1/2 inches the first surgery and about 1/2 inch on the second surgery. She is so loud, just makes me sick! And she got horrible sick after the 2nd surgery, 104 temp, vomiting non-stop, had to rush her back for fluids and anti vomit meds. She was a very sick girl...and a routine no cost surgery cost 1K. I feel like I ruined my dog.

I hope you don't end up with the results I had.

BIG difference after palate clip...

Yes you should definitely get it done, especially since your vet recommends it.

My Dudley was neutered, palate trimmed and nostrils widened all at the same time.

He did just fine.

Yes, definitely!

It is absolutely worth it. You will notice a big difference, especially with summer coming.

Absolutely have it done

imagine trying to breath through a straw. It made such a difference in the quality of life for my dog, he played more, slept better, was so much more relaxed.

Good luck

Yes, have it done.

If your vet feels it would benefit your bully, and you will have her with specialists who will be using laser (desirable because of reduced probability of bleeding) I'd go ahead with it. happy.gif

Best thing I ever did for him...

I had Q's done when he was under to be neutered. His palate wasn't horrible, but it helped with his breathing and exercise tolerance. Q was done by laser, too.
The only issue with palate surgery, is if it's done when the dog is too young, it may have to be done again, later (as the dog grows). Q was 16 months. happy.gif
