Hi All -
My bully suffers from Cherry Eye but I was advised by multiple vets not to have it removed but to tuck it. Although I was advised to wait until he is a year old (he will be at the end of the month) or to wait until it stays for a few days at a time (it just comes and goes here and there)...
Anywhoo I noticed there was no cherry eye but his eye was very irritated the other night, I took him to the vet and he ended up having a scratched cornea. They gave me some ointment put the cone on his head and said come back in three days. I went back yesterday (3 days later) and they said the cut is stil there and just as bad.
Tey gave me some more drops and ointment and said to come back in one week. they said he must of scratched it while he was rubbing at the cherry eye.
Does anyone have any advice or has this happened to anyone else?
thanks everyone
Thanks...
My vet also told me about streoids being a no no!
I'm really hoping when I bring him back this Fri it will be healed up or at least getting better, once that is confirmed I will have the cherry eye removed.

Hi - It's not a vet specialized for Bullies but it's the only vet in the area I have found that has worked on bullies for years now.
I have to go back this fri and they will retest it to see how it's healing.
Thank You for your advise, I think I will do some more research for a bully vet and or an eye specialist and get this taken care of once and for all
also...with a scratched cornea,
make sure that the medication they are giving for the eye does not have a steroid in it. I had a highly regarded vet opthalmologist tell me that steroids in an eye medication with an eye ulcer/abrasion will make it worse.
Also would agree to have the cherry eye removed if it is staying out. I do have an older dog that occasionally will pop their cherry eye out, but am able to roll it back into place, and the only time it happens is when they are rubbing their face on the carpet alot.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Agree with Sue
we tortured ourselves about what to do. Decided on tacking...didn't work. Tacked again...didn't work. Had it cut out...no dry eye. Not sure why they want you to wait until he's a year, never heard that on here before.

I've had experience with my dog...
having a scratched cornea.
I'll tell you that they can take a looooooooong time to heal. Opal's would not heal using the ointment so my vet sewed the eye shut for 10 days. It made a natural band-aid. When it was unsewn the eye was MUCH better and then continued healing with the ointment.
Regarding the cherry eye....have it removed. My vet does it with just a local anesthetic which is a big plus. Tacking has a VERY high rate of sthe gland becoming untacked & popping out again and the dog would need another surgery. My vet did a study & found that removing the gland does NOT cause dry eye.
Good luck,
Sue
Question Nicole.......
Are you seeing a bulldog vet? I have had bullies that have had both cherry eye and corneal ulcers (not the same dog). Corneal ulcers do take time to heal and wouldn't normally heal up in 3 days. I have had cherry eye removed in a bully as young as 5 months old, so I don't know about the waiting until 1 year of age thing. Sometimes you can get them to go back in & stay in (I have always tried this) but it doesn't always work. As far as tacking it down vs. removal, I have them removed. I've never had a problem with dry eye. Cherry eye looks awful to us, but usually doesn't cause the dog any pain. But corneal ulcers can be painful and need to be taken care of. Hope you baby is feeling better soon.
