Runny eye

I have a sweet bully (Burger) at home with a runny eye. This eye is snotty in the morning yet runs all day, I cant keep his eye area dry to save my life. The goop is not green or yellow, but clear. He is not showing signs of Cherry Eye though. I have been massaging the eye with a warm wash cloth and putting in some ointment from his vet twice a day. This is the only time he acts ugly, he hates when I put it into his eye. His tears are not causing stains, but it is constantly wet. When he wakes up in the morning he has a ring around his eye.

Any suggestions of what I can do???? His vet seems to think this will go away but it's not. He has been eating NB Venison & Sweet Potato, could this be causing a reaction???

That 'wrong-way eyelash' was distichia

and if indeed there are very few hairs they can often be plucked and the problem is solved. Of course it works well if the dog is sedated, or very cooperative. happy.gif

eyelash?

harlow had a bit or a runny eye a bit ago and some clear goop in the am, when she had her xrays (she was sedated) the vet checked her eye and sure enough she had an eyelash growing the wrong way, he plucked it and wala, no more issues.

If he has pronounced entropion or distichia

I would suspect you might see some cloudiness on the surface of the eye and/or squinting along with the excess tearing. I think he's having more of a blocked tear duct problem and want to suggest you try some allergy tear drops, as that may reduce the swelling on the duct enough to take care of the problem. If not, then the duct may need to be "flushed" and if your vet isn't comfortable doing this, has the correct canula, etc. then you may be referred to an eye specialist (which will probably be EXPENSIVE, but should clarify for certain what needs to be done for this dog's eye-health). happy.gif

Did the vet check for

entropion or Distichiasis? Entropion is where the eyelid is very tight to the eye and actually rolls inward so the lashes irritate the eyeball. Distichiasis is where eyelashes grow out of the lid in a different area and rub on the eye. I would have him checked for those.
