Hi all, Love this board, lots of great info so thanks for doing it so well!
Our little darling is growing so fast! he's 25 lbs at 5 months....he's gained 11 lbs in 5 weeks!
My 2 questions are as follows..
1. I'm starting to question the harness concept. When we go for walks, he sees a bird, another dog, an angry looking leaf...and he pulls and pulls. I have to grab him and make him sit. After a while of this, I can hear his breathing get more labored (like wheezing). Is the harness a bad idea?
2. Like I said, Rocco is growing up fast...so fast in fact he is humping his favorite pillow rather vigorously and more frequently. I am a little surprised this is happening at 5 months? Is this normal or is it a sign Rocco needs to get "fixed"?
Thanks again for all the previous help and advice! Having this board gives me more confidence knowing good answers are a few clicks away.

Oh yeah...
Oh yes, there sure is full time obedience. That was the best thing I have ever done, when he doesn't listen now it almost goes without words. Just holding your hand in a certain position in front of him will do it. Even if I want him to move I will just look at him and then to where I want him to go and he will go. Through the training I have bonded with the dog so much, that he picks up all of my emotions and the other way around. If I am unsure while walking about a certain person, he will automatically step one step ahead of me to assure me that I'm gonna be fine and if he hesitates, I will show him that he can trust me and he's fine. I think we have reached the same thought level... Really weird... He's my dude!

Hey great name for the Dog

Quite frankly, Roccos seem to have these thing is common... mine did the exact same thing. I enrolled him into FULLTIME Obedience training for 8 weeks... He was there all day long while I was at work (12 hours) for eight weeks straight and now he is enrolled into group classes, for the rest of his life (don't ask how much this whole deal cost) He is not wearing a harness, and quite frankly, most of the time I can walk with him without a leash and he will not leave my side, even if he sees a bitch in heat. Rocco is now eight months old, not neutered and well behaved!

I would enroll him in a puppy obedience class...
and train him to walk with you on the harness. I don't like the choke collars, if they pull hard with one on it's even worse for their breathing. They do make harnesses that pull their front ends up when they pull, but I've never used one. For some reason our two walk really good with us. He probably does need to be neutered, that can be done from 6 months on. I would limit his time with his 'playmate' so he doesn't injure himself or before this behavior becomes ingrained. We take 'big yellow ducky' away if Chester starts getting frisky with him, most of the time he just lays on top of him and sucks on his head.

Welcome to the Rocco club! LOL
It is a great name. I personally had the oppostie of a puller with my Rocco. He would not walk even though he has a lot of drive!!! I enrolled Roc in obedience classes from the get go and he even recieved his CGC at 8 months! The classes are a great way to help establish a bond and the proper order of dominance. What worked best for him was a prong collar and proper use of it. He only needed it for training and used it for a few months. If I had a puller, I would use it for that too.

I think harness's promote pulling.
As far as humping, we just always verbally corrected him if he humped a pillow or dog and he quickly passed that phase. I think the main thing is to be consistent.

wow
I had no idea there was full time obedience classes. I'll have to look into that b/c I would love to go on "normal" walks with Rocco.
Instead it's him trying to eat mulch, bird poop and me dragging him.
Thanks for the info...I will look into the neutering and obedience schools.
