Raw Feeding problems...

We have started raw feeding Gunther for about 11 days now. He is on Turkey. The reason we switched him was he was getting ear infections, and licking his paws a lot. Now, 11 days in and I feel he is getting a lot more symptoms.

He is licking his paws a lot. I think I found an ITC in his toe. (He may or may not of had any in the past, I never really could find anything.) He even has a pimple on his chin, and I really thought we got rid of those 6-8 months ago! We often battle smelly tear stains so we keep on that, but I think that's even increased a teeny bit.

I googled it and I read somewhere that some dogs experience detox symptoms like itching, diarrhea, vomiting and bad breath. The only thing I notice is itching (paws) and bad breath. They said to stick with it. I thought this was going to be the answer for us, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen anything similar.

Thanks!

We live in Burlington. We get our stuff at Ryans.

I bought the brand Mountain Dog Food.http://www.mountaindogfood.com/ Many places have it but we got it at Ryan's Pet Food here in Burlington. It was comparable to the kibble we were buying, but if you have lots of dogs, it would be expensive!!

Raw diet questions

How do you know how much of each ingriedient to give to get the right nutrition?

I would like to try raw with my guys, Pugsley is allergic to grains. But I am not sure of how to start, what ingridients to use, or how to prepare it.

Thanks!

I tried the barf

diet, when I told my vet, they didnt say anything, but weren't very happy about it.  They can get salmonella, etc.  So I put them on California Natural Herring and sweet potato.  Their tear stains went away, their coats are beautiful, not bad breath, no licking, etc.  Ears are great.  Can't say enough about it their weights are good too.

I disagree.

It's widely known that dog's digestive tracts are shorter and therefore faster. They handle something like salmonella differently than humans.

7 years of raw and no issues here. happy.gif And my vet not only approves, he feeds a raw diet as well.

25 years on raw and home diets......

i started 25 years ago with my rottweilers, as i brought my breeding stock from germany and these dogs could not handle all the grains in kibble.....
rule number one...keep it as simple as possible....but i find alot of people cheat and give treats that have grains.....no treats cook up some liver and beef hearts...and instruct the whole family these are the only treats allowed......also get some blue berries and strwberies dogs love these as treats....bannas are great treats also...i would add a teaspoon of yougurt a day not to much more....also add one cup a week of salmon(this should be fresh) this has incrediable omaga oils in it....
it took months for your problems so give it a good 6 months....i still have trouble with idc with wilson...but this from a contact allergy....but being on the raw his feet look great 99% of the time......

my opinion and experience is that they

do detox. I have one girl that I feed raw (the others will follow :O).....she seemed to get worse before better, she even got tear stains and stains on her feet, I almost gave up but didn't. She has now been on raw for about two months and is doing well. You might want to change your meat source. Are you using probiotics with enzymes?

Yes, he could absolutely be "detoxing"

The symptoms can be worse depending on the quality of the food you were feeding prior to the switch. If you're serious about feeding raw (which I am a HUGE proponent of), you'll need to stick with it for AT LEAST a few more months to see any changes.

Has he eaten turkey before? Was it an ingredient in his previous diet? Usually, turkey or chicken are easy for people to start with when switching to a raw diet, since most dogs tolerate them well. However, there is always the possibility that he is allergic to turkey. You might have to try some different meats.

Good luck! happy.gif

With allergies they say whitefish

is the best. I love Dr. Marty Goldstein, I read his book "the nature of animal healing" and listen to his shows. There is a good section on allergies in the book. That's where I read about the whitefish.

Depending on how severe he is, you may want to do an allergy test (blood test) to see what you are dealing with.

No, don't know

Wow, it's so hard to figure this out. I do not know if he's allergic to bird. I thought that was the safest start though...

Do you know for sure

that he's not allergic to bird? My boy is bad with chicken. That would be my first thought. Maybe he'd do better on a different meat source? What was the main meat source of his kibble? I would def. wait a couple weeks to make sure it's not just a detox though.

I've never fed raw so no help really, just thinking out loud I guess. Good luck.
