Rare anatomical problem with the right urater...... advice please????

FROM OUR ADOPTERS: "went to Maitland (Orlando) yesterday to see the specialists. They did their own ultrasound & ran blood work. Basically, Dora has a rare (figures) anatomical problem with the right urater (tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). It is extremely dilated due to urine not emptying into the bladder the way it should. According to the docs & surgeon, removing the right kidney & urater is the best solution. But, they would have to test the left kidney function first, obviously. The surgery alone is $2,500 to $3,000. This does not include the GRF test that would test the other kidney. At this time, I guess were looking at long term pulse antibiotic treatment until she fails to the point of euthanasia. Clearly, this is a very difficult decision. But, the financial demand is impossible. I do plan to consult with a holistic vet, as well. (I know he cant fix her anatomy). Since shell be 7 in October, I have concerns over surgical risks, as well. We havent given up on Dora! But, the prognosis is not good, apparently this condition could kill herseptic!" anyone go thru this type of thing....

Well, she has lived 7 years with it...

Putting the expense aside, it still may not be the best solution at her age. She might not even make it through such a serious surgery. Maybe she can just maintain for a couple more years with a special diet and some meds IF she isn't in too much pain.

A "Specialist" solution isn't always the best one. I think they sometimes get caught up in the idea of a surgical fix and forget to consider everything about the dog in front of them.
