questions for those with 2 bullies....

do they share toys or have their own?

and if you tried too late to teach your first dog something, ie. ringing a bell to go out, tolerating a dremel, will teaching the new dog be harder with the first dog around? could it help teach your old dog?

When the dremel comes out....

Rosey goes into hiding. As soon as I pick it up...Rosey heads for the hills....The puppies haven't caught on yet, and follow me around regardless of what I'm holding, but Rosey is too smart for that...and as soon as I have it in my hand she bolts.

Melanie, you remined me of a bitch I had years ago...

She KNEW what nail clippers were. It wasn't that she was sensitive about her feet/toes being handled. She would lay and sleep and let me rub her feet and toes all I wanted. But, as soon as I got the nail clipper in my hand (this was way before I started grinding them), and grabbed her foot, but not even touching her nail with the clippers, she'd let off with the loudest banshee cry and wail, I swore the neighbors down the block could hear and thought I was killing her. Makes me laugh now thinking about it.

Exactly!

I do both of them on their backs in my lap.

Grady squirms a little, but not too bad. Sometimes he falls asleep temporarily, then he wakes up and remembers what's happening.

Pepper really has improved. She used to kick and scream like I was killing her, even before I touched her with either the clippers or dremel. Now she just squirms and puts up with it.

i would not say share, i would say

FIGHT! We have doubles of every toy - just want what the other has! The only toy that is not shared is the soccer ball. That is Sophie's comfort toy and Lucy seems to respect that, just as Sophie leaves lucy's harley toy alone!

Charlie doesn't like toys...

but MOpsy has a whole closet. They share if Charlie wants one but most of the time he does not.

That's how MiniMe got his name

When we brought him home, he mimicked everything Clem did. If Clem turned left, MiniMe turned left, Clem sat down, MiniMe sat down.

I think alot depends on the individual dogs and their temperaments.

Melanie, don't you love doing nails???

LOL..... they are all different, some fall asleep snoring, others squirm, some get vocal.

Last week we did everyone's nails. When we were doing Sheezam's nails (the 5 month old girl), she was not happy, stiff as a board and tongue stuck out. Her brother, Desi, kept trying to climb in my lap with her, kept licking her, telling her it was ok, and he had to put his nose about 1/2 inch from the dremel as John was doing it, to see what he was doing to his sister. Wish I could have taken a picture, but needless to say, my hands were full holding her, while John did the dastardly deed.....lol

Our two bullies

share their toys right now. We only got the second one a week ago, but that's how it is for now. For training, all I know is the first one became an expert at everything he does just as we got the second one last week. I don't know if its to impress her or if it was just coincidence. It does seem to help though. I taught the new one to sit in 5 seconds because the older one was sitting right next to her and did it right on command. They seem to look at each other once in a while as to say "master likes me better 'cause I sat quicker than you did." She was watching him go potty outside and she usually takes forever. She ended up going right after he did. I'd bet that the older one would learn just as fast if he/she saw your younger one getting all the praise. Try it out and report your findings. The most important thing that I have to remind myself every day (with our younger one) is to have patience. Your patience in training now will reward itself in the future.

Pepper & Grady

1) They never share a toy at the same time, except in the rare case that they play tug-of-war with a rope toy. They each play with separate toys, sometimes at the same time. Usually, one of them will want whatever toy the other has. When the one playing is done with the toy, the other one grabs it. For this reason, I never buy two of the same toy, because they will always want what the other one has, no matter what.

2) Yes, I believe that some of your training may be easier with a second dog. However, it all depends on the personality of the new dog. Potty training is usually easier if there is another trained dog in the house. I'm not sure about the dremel, though. I've had Pepper since day 1, and have been doing her nails since she was a tiny pup, but she is still more difficult than Grady. Grady arrived when Pepper was about 4 years old, and he has always been easier when it comes to doing nails. I can do them both myself, but Pepper is a real "bitch" sometimes (they don't call them that for nothing!). I think Pepper actually got a little better about nails after Grady arrived.

cutting nails

Hi Julie
I have a couple of bullies myself whom I use my dremel on. My girl heads off to the hills too every time she sees me with it. I use disposable gloves to clean their bums too and every time my Isabella sees me with those on she runs off. Those bullies are smarter than they're given credit for. No tricks for no food either!
