Question about reoccuring limp..

My bullie dozer and I go to the dog park every weekend and he loves it, but i'm getting concerned because every time we go and dozer exerts himself a little to hard, i.e. runs too much or jumps alot he comes home limping. At first i thought it was just a one time thing but its happening everytime he runs or jumps too much. Its always his front leg, he doesn't have any probs with the back. Once we get him home and let him rest for a couple of days hes good to go again. Could this be something i need to have his vet investigate now or should i just watch his activity level and wait? I'm prepared to thouroughly investigate this if needed or am i just letting him get to rowdy at the park? He really trys to run with the big dogs who fetch, like lab's birdogs, ect.. and everyone at the park has remarked they've never seen a bulldog with so much energy or speed. And he runs alot when out in the open. I always like to say he's a greyhound in a bulldog body, lol. I just wanted some insight or opinion on what to do i love my boy to death but i hate to think i cant let him run cuz he loves it so, but if it will save his shoulder and future problems i will do it. Thanks for the input guys.

I wanted your thoughts, my Lola limps in her left rear leg but if it were ligament or knee(acl) issues would the limping go away? Since her limping is only after excessive play... not just typical bulldog zoomies I think its muscle.. If she tore some ligaments the limping most likely wouldnt go away all together would it?

Also as you recommended some time ago I lowered my bed to the floor and its about 14-16 inches off the floor. Lola barely has to jump up to get on the bed.. Should I try some steps to further reduce the impact to her.. The bed is really low and she may not even bother with the steps.

I would forego the dog park for a while...

and let him really heal up. Is he on adult food now? If not, he should be, that can sometimes cause growing pains. Our boy Oscar limped off and on for months as a puppy, the vet did a skyline xray to see what was going on, which was nothing. He finally grew out of it with rest.

Muscle strains and sprains don't show on x-ray...

only bone or joints do, and then even with joint pix its not always easy to see if there's a notable problem altho sometimes some light shadowing indicates some arthritis in a joint. Presuming that Dozer is a young dog (under 5yrs) its probably muscular since you said he recovers with a couple days of rest/low activity so I'd say just be sure that he has those days of rest/recovery and when that doesn't happen and he continues to limp or act sore by the following weekend I'd have an evaluation done. Limping on the rear end is more commonly seen with ligament damage or kneecaps out of place/slipping but front end limping can be Pano. You may want to do a bit of reading about Pano = an inflammation of the large bones of a young dog. I'm not sure of the treatment for Panostitis but I believe it is just 'rest' along with reduced exercise. happy.gif
