I have just purchased an NKC Female 6MO. OLD aMERICAN bULLDOG. When I recieved her she had a really bad looking red bump in her bottom eyelid and it oozes. I was told by the breeder it was Cherry Eye and nothing to worry about. Is this ainful to my dog? How do they get this? What exactly is and causes it? How do you treat it?
We call it "cherry eye" because the duct looks red-cherrylike...
and it is a prolapsed tear duct that normally sits down under the 3rd eyelid (inner eyelid) on the inside corner of the eye. It can product up to 40% of the tear production for the eye so if its healthy its worth saving, but some vets cut them out while others replace them and suture them down so they cannot pop out again. Whether this surgery to reposition is successful depends on how much skill the surgeon has, how healthy the duct is (now that it has been exposed for a long time) and how well the dog heals afterward.
A weak muscle may have allowed the duct to prolapse and this can be inherited so there is some feeling that you should not breed this dog, not pass on this inherited trait. The duct can also prolapse from an extended eye infection or injury. While it doesn't directly affect the dog's vision, it is not healthy to leave it out - its an attraction to infection - and it has to be bothersome for the dog as well. Its not an emergency tho, so take your time and discuss options with your vet on how best to deal with this.
I'm concerned it oozes
What is it oozing? Is it infected? The breeder should have had it repaired before giving or selling you the dog.
There is a good link about cherry Eye on the home page. It is the third eye lid that has popped out. It can be corrected by surgery. It should not be painful unless infected and there is no treatment. It will stay like that until you have it fixed.
Re: I'm concerned it oozes
I agree with you. The breeder should have the problem fixed. It would be best not to breed the dog either because you don't want to pass those bad traits down
