Puppy Tail Shape - Future Problem?

Can a vet or experienced breeder evaluate a puppy and tell if her tail will be a future "problem tail" as she matures? Does a puppy with a screwed tail (starts out straight for about an inch and then has a turn to the left)have a chance at becoming a problem tail that sits in a pocket, becomes infected, needs amputation, etc. once the puppy is an adult? I realize that a straight tail is the best choice, but we are considering a puppy that has more of a screwed tail.

The tail in question is similar to the "screwed tail" pictured on the BCA at this link under "Proper Tails.":

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I know what you mean......

I sure know what you mean. I'd like to avoid the tail issues if at all possible (or at least try). I just spoke with a couple of Bulldog vets and they say that there is no real way to tell with a puppy how the tail will end up as an adult. (Unless, of course, it's already inverted, etc.) I do think this one will grow just fine, but a straight tail is certainly preferred as apparently it would be unlikely to be an issue as an adult.

Thanks again for your thoughts......

Lisa...

If the puppy's tail doesn't "sit" in a pocket, it should be fine. I don't know for sure but if a bullie has a tail like Onslow's there's not a pocket. Onslow's mom could probably clarify that for you. Punkie has a deep pocket and her tail is set very tight and deep into the pocket. It actually looks as if she has no tail. I love Punkie with all my heart and soul but if/when I get my next Bullie, she will have a tail like Onslow's!

Thank you for the pic!

Yes, it does look like the tail in your picture. (Love the spots on Onslow's belly, by the way!) happy.gif

Sounds like I need to determine if there is a pocket. I'm new to bulldogs and all of their "special" nuances, so I'll have to check into that one.

Many thanks again for helping me with this!

Does it look similar to this?

This is Onslow's tail.

His does not have a pocket and we've never had any problems at all with it. The key problem, like Punky's mom said is if there is a deep pocket behind there where gunk can collect and cause problems/infection.

Actually we love it because it stays clean and he can wag it. As long as there is no pocket I would think you'd be fine.

P.S. The curves on the tail collect dead hair so they have to be brushed at times.

I don't think that kind of tail would be a problem. BUT

Punkie Brewster has the high set bun type tail and it is set into a very deep pocket. My vet has checked it many times and says as long as I keep it clean and DRY it shouldn't be a problem. The pocket is what causes the problems with Punkie...not necessarily her tail.

Hope this helps.
