Puppy question...7 days old

This is about puppy that Atlas sired the litter and owner called me today on my way home and she said one of the little males (there had been 2 noticeably smaller pups...the littlest male died a day or two ago)...he has one side of his skull swollen...it is soft tissue from mid point above yes, extends just behind ear and down to maybe level with the jaw bone. He has a poor sucking reflex.
He is however still very active and feisty if you try to put something in his mouth he doesn't want. I tube fed him and showed her how to do it and marked the tube....he swallowed it without a problem. and had nice full but not too tight tummy. He is hydrated as he peed readily in my hand (thanks!) but I'd like to see a bit quicker bounce back of skin on his back though it is not really dehydrated type. Gums looked fine in color, cried when I tried to do anything he didn't like...did not cry when I felt around his head.
Mom has not been in with them and she takes them out to put on mom and then puts them away after they are cleaned up....b/c my first reaction was Mom stepped on him and pulled her paw away fast when she did it so she didn't squish his head all out of shape...the right side is absolutely fine and then midway across skull soft swelling starts. Looks like what you would get if you banged your head hard and got like a knot on it...but of course, he is little so it is a good portion of left side of head. Does not extend down nose at all or mouth or anything.
I told her if he wasn't all better by Monday to take him in to vet as the emergency clinic is not the greatest vets for newborns here. I sent her to reproductive vet I go to.
Anyone seen this w/o having had someone step on puppy????
Thanks for any feedback or responses. If he was my kid I'd have an ice pack on his head...but we don't need a chilled puppy!

I will email the owner of the litter....I have never seen this before but it would make more sense since she didn't leave him w/ mom...who has settled in but was an awfully nervous mom the first 4 days.

Thanks Cathy...

Maybe the emergency clinic could take care of him...With the fire I have no syringes left to try to drain anything or see if it is pus filled or blood filled.

Re: No...it starts...

The puppy that I am taking care of for someone else had the same thing. It went from the top of his head around his ear and then down the side of his face towards his neck. There was no opening either. IT was soft & hard in places. I drained 8.5 cc's of gunk out of this puppy after the vet drained it the day before.

Just had this happen

I agree with Miriam! It sounds like an abscess. Have it checked. It was probably from another puppy's nail that poked it in the side of it's little face. You will have to have it drained & it needs to be on antibiotics.

No...it starts...

midline on top of his head and goes towards his left side...no temperature, maybe an abcess...odd place for it...I would have thought abcess if it was more to the total left but it starts right in the middle of the top of his head/skull...it is soft so abcess would fit that...no opening in skin I could find anywhere...of course he is only 7 days old so it isn't easy to look inside his mouth and his ears are still closed over.
If it was an abcess that should be treatable...hopefully
Thank you!

swelling

Just to be sure of your description: the swelling is not on top of his head above the ear (skull) but starts behind the ear and goes down the side of the face? This is an abscess (I am 95% sure from your description as I have had the same thing before)--needs to be drained and started on abx. It is a puppy thing--in that it has a name I can't remember. Usually not contagious but once it is opened to drain I become concerned so I put all pups on abx.
