What is the best formula to feed a bulldog puppy. My puppy is 4 weeks old and the vet wants me to keep him on formula while feeding him mushed puppy food. He weighs 1lb and 13 oz. The vet said that he was completely healthy, just a little small. I just got him on wed, the lady that had him, had him on goats milk and mushed puppy food. The mom's milk completely dried up when he was 2 weeks old. So he has been bottle fed completely for the last two weeks. The vet gave me some formula, but I have also seen a homemade formula recipe and I wonder if that is better for him. He is eating every 4 hours and pottying normally. I am just wondering if anyone else has some suggestions for me. Thank you
Re: Feeding
Thank you for all of your responses. I went and bought the ebsilac formula and I will try the rice cereal and the baby food. The lady I got Maverick from had an out of town funeral and would not be back for a few days, so I volunteered to take my baby early since she was going to have to leave him with someone else anyway. I took him to my regular vet for a checkup just to be on the safe side. I just want what is best for him so I thought that I would ask the more experienced bully owners. Thank you again.

Re: puppy question
I would also add baby food meat to the mixture to give some extra protein....I certainly hope she gave you this pup or that you volunteered for all this work...
I agree with Sue etc above....4 weeks old is ridiculous unless you have some sort of special arrangement b/c of her circumstances....Good luck with the baby anyway...I don't know the circumstances so not my place to judge anyone...just want the pup to grow up healthy. You can also sort of puree cottage cheese in a blender...Marie Andree used to use cottage cheese in her puppy formula she made up.

I think it's against the law in most places to sell a pup
That's under 8 weeks of age.

Good luck with your baby. Sue gave you good advice.

Feeding
I almost always have to supplement a litter and have tried lots of the different formulas. I like the Esbilac Goats Milk formula the best and Esbilac also makes a weaning formula called 2nd step that my pups love. You can slowly adjust the consistence and it can be fed from a bottle with an enlarged hole if needed. Poops have always been good and weight gain is fantastic.

First of all...
I think that it's absolutely disgusting that the breeder would let this puppy go at 4 weeks old.
Although she's no longer feeding him he should still be with her & his siblings until he is at least 8 weeks old.
I know that you want to do the very best for him. At 4 weeks old I feed my puppies Gerger baby rice cereal mixed with baby lamb and goats milk. Make it about the consistancy of a thick gravy. You don't want it to pasty. Once he's good at eating that you can add some ground up puppy food. I put dry puppy kibble in a food processor & grind it into a powder. You can slowly add more puppy food & less baby rice cereal until you're just feeding dog food. After a few days of that then you can try some puppy food soaked in water. Soak it for at least an hour so it's really mushy & easy to eat. You can mix a little warm goats milk in it just before serving. At 6 weeks old you can try him on dry food.
Good luck & I'd love to see pictures of him.
