Hi everyone... I need some advice on how to get my baby trimmed down!
Hugo is just shy of his 5 month birthday and weighs close to 40 lbs. His last visit to the vet was a month ago, at which time we were told he's a bit on the chubby side. Can't feel his ribs, and not a nicely defined tummy profile. I've since cut his food back from 1 heaping cup three times a day down to 3/4 cup three times a day, and have also been taking him on one, if not two, 30-45 minute walk/day, weather pending. I try to play fetch with him in the apartment, but he's often reluctant (typical bullie!) and would rather just wander around on his own and sit... or sleep!
So it's been 4 weeks and I STILL cannot feel his ribs nor can I see a hint of tummy definition! Is it possible that he's, perhaps, just meant to be chubby? (When we picked him up from the breeder at 8 wks he was already 10 lbs! The biggest of the litter!)
Thanks for your help!
Thank you all!
I feel so much better about Hugo's extra chub after hearing all of your input!
It totally makes sense that, as a puppy, he should be a little chubby... like how the rest of us had baby fat when we were kids! He's growing and needs to eat... I totally don't want to starve him, so that green bean suggestion sounds like a good thing to try! I DO feel his ribs when he lies on his side and all that skin slides off towards the ground, so thank you also for that tip! But I will definitely consult with the breeder on this one too to get some perspective... now that I think of it, she's often times more helpful and reassuring than the vet!
Thanks again everyone for your help! I really appreciate it! =)

Ditto here...
Roxy just had her final round of puppy vaccinations today. We've been VERY strict about diet. She's 4 months and about 24 lbs. I asked the vet if this is looking good. He said he doesn't go nearly as much on actual weight as he does shape of the dog, according to breed. I was happy to hear him say that. From what I've been reading and learnd so far on these forums that's how we we want our vets to think, correct?

That's what I love about my Vet
He has never told me my dogs are fat. I did ask him about Trace's weight when he was growing so fast and he told me he was "perfect". I really love my Vet.

ALL VETS SAY THEY ARE FAT
if you cut his food back to much he will go in to starvation mode and will not loos a thing but take vital nutrience from his organs, heart, liver, kidneys....
he can eat twice a day now depending on what your feeding him you can feed him 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 cups twice a day, increase his activity. stop snacking and treats....
when he lays on his side with you should be able to feel his ribs when you push in a bit, but not run your hands over his side and feel every rib or see them at all.
he is a baby, dont worry to much about his wt, he is like a toddler, they get chunky and then thin out as they hit a growth spurt.
Talk to your breeder they know best even more then most vets.

I wouldn't try to make him lose weight
Unless he is a very small bulldog he should keep gaining weight. I would cut his food back to 1 - 1 1/2 cup(s) twice a day.

Re: Puppy not losing weight?
Feed 1 cup 2x aday then in the evening give a cup of string beans, the frozen type
but thaw them out, stay away from the canned one ( to mush salt )
