Puppy Mange

Hi Everyone.  I am new to the forum and just posted an introduction to myself and my bullie, 15 week old Dolly Mae on the general discussion forum.  However, I have a topic here as well...MANGE...ugh!  Dolly Mae was diagnosed last week after we noticed a few spots on her head and face.  After the Dx was confirmed via skin scrape, they did a Mitaban dip and she had a severe allergic reaction (head and face swelled up like a balloon).  A week ago today they started her on Ivermectin, but she appears to me to be getting worse (small patches now appearing in different areas of her body).  Now, I have heard the issue can get worse before it gets better, so I am hesitant to take her back to the vet now when she has a follow-up next week already scheduled.  But…I still have a nagging concern that I could be doing more to help.  So, my question is around additional things I can do to naturally boost her immune system.  I am feeding Royal Canin Medium Puppy (since I got her at 8 weeks) and last week added Vitamin E 3x daily at the vets suggestion.  Anyone have any additional thoughts?

I would add...

a zinc tablet, i think they are 25 mg, an Ester C -probably 500 mg, and a good multivitamin to help build up her immune system to fight off the mites.  The Ivermectin should work with time, but I wouldn't hesitate to call the vet if she's looking worse.  When my first bulldog Truman had demodex, they also gave me a topical called Goodwinol that I used.  I don't know when you did the puppy shots, but I always hold off on the rabies until 8 months of age since the stress of teething, etc plus the vaccinces and rabies can stress their immune systems just for future reference.

Just read her age...

don't let them give her any vaccines until she's over the mange.  Also, I highly recommend grain free foods, they help prevent allergies and you can switch a bulldog pup to adult food at a very young age, mine switched at 4 months.

The ivermectin worked for us

I do remember it taking a while though.  PLUS, Stella got it again a few months later.  Again the ivermectic cleared it up eventually and it never came back.

I never gave her any supplements to boost her immunity, but if I was to get a do-over, I would.

Best of luck with your little dolly.

Aww I know how you feel.

Onslow had a terrible case and (I know) it took almost 8 months to get a clean scrape.  Hopefully Dolly Mae's case isn't as bad as Onslow's was.

It does get worse before they look better but keep up with your appointments and the ivermectin, it will help - as she gains weight they will need to adjust the dosage so it's pretty important that you keep your appts.  Did they give you any medicated shampoo to bathe her in?  That also helps a lot.

As far as your immunity question, my vet recommended we put Onslow on Astragalus (chinese herbal name is Fu-Zeng).  It's an herbal supplement that people/animals with immune issues take.  You could do a google search on either name to read up on it.  I still give it to Onslow at age 4.  :)  If you decide you want to use this treatment message me for dosage.  Good luck and I hope that she is feeling better real soon.

vit e 3x a day is a over load.....

vit e will build up in the liver unlike vit c which is expressed thru the kidneys.....one tab a day is enough.....

Our experience with Gus

Gus had demodex mange last year.  We started off with Goodwinol and a medicated shampoo.  His demodex didn't respond to that course of treatment so the vet then recommended Mitaban dips.  The demodex gradually disappeared.  I don't know if it was the Mitaban (we did four dips) or that his own immune system got stronger but it did go away.

Good luck with Miss Dolly Mae - she is just adorable!

Ivermection will work

and yes it is typical that it will get a little worse before it gets better. What dose are you giving in the Ivermection and are you giving it orally? She needs to be rechecked after 2 weeks and then again after another 2 weeks.

If I remember right we were pretty aggressive with the amount of the Ivermection the first few days or the first week. That of course is if the dog can handle it and doesn't get sick.

Hold off on the Rabies if you haven't already given it. I know they try to give it with the last shots and it is such a huge stress on their immune system.

Start the adult food anytime now, I have switched them typically around 4 - 5 months if they aren't already on an All Life Stage food.

Been there too...

Olivia had it as a puppy.  She was also on Ivermec.  It takes about 3 months to resolve.  Make sure you continue  to give the medication until you get TWO clean scrapes.

Now...My pups get 1 shot at a time, 4 weeks apart so their immune system isn't badly compromised.  After puppy shots are done then they get the kennel cough vaccine and 4 weeks later rabies.

Soon after rabies shot?

I just wonder, from what I've read here.  I waited till Brother was older, no Demodex, but that may not be why.  I think you're using the right stuff, orally right?
