We have a new 9 week old furbaby. Another Shih Tzu girl. She is beautiful! So now we have Henry and the "girls". Henry is in hog-heaven. He just loves Prissy to death and is already checkin out the new girl.
We picked her up tonight and the breeder we got her from was really wonderful. She cried like a baby when we left with her. She gave her a bath for us before we got there and blew her dry. THey live out in the country though, and when we got her home, we started finding small ticks all over her.
We pulled several off of her before deciding there was no way we would ever get them all. Some of them are super tiny. I can get REVOLUTION on Monday from my vet. That will kill them and keep them from getting on her again. Obviously, she got them from the breeders yard.
In the meantime, what can I do to get rid of them? She is 9 wks old and weighs 2.5 pounds.
Adams Flea and Tick spray
This is what I use and you can get it at Petsmart.
Flea Comb?
Wont the head break off in her if you pull them out with a flea comb? Some of these are tee-niny!
Thats the problem. She is a little black puff-ball. There is no way I will get them all with visual inspection because they are so tiny. You cant really feel them and seeing them is a shot in the dark with her black fur.
I dont think the Adams is safe for puppies under 12 weeks. I was considering a dip for puppies to use today til I can get her to the vet tomorrow (for the Revolution) but Adams says 12 wks and over. Didnt know if anyone knew of a dip for 9wk olds. She also is very small- 2.5 pounds.
I just have to make it through today but I cant let her out of her crate for too long because I dont want the ticks on the kids, other dogs or in the house. EWWW! I hate ticks!
Ideas
Last year, our yard was tick laden, and we battled them for months. I would let the breeder know about this as there is a Bayer Yard spray that really helped us control them last year. Had to spray every 2-3 weeks.
I would use a flea comb and go over her very carefully. That should get most of them. I would also go to Petsmart and get the Adams Flea and Tick spray in the blue bottle. Last time I looked, there were 5 or more kinds(used to be one) and read if you can use it on puppies that young. I would get a shampoo too and wash it if the shampoo says you can use it on puppies. If her hair is too thick for a Flea comb, try a wire brush to get out what you can. Then visually go over her completely with your hands and remove them. You may be able to find a little notched stick tick remover at Petsmart also or use tweezers. I have heard that they will smother and let go if you use Vaseline or nail polish on their bodies.
Best of luck with this. From my experience, the flea comb and visual inspection give you the best result immediately and peace of mind, too. All of the tick products say they kill them in 24 hours. Too long for me.
Problem with picking them all off....
some of them are extremely tiny. She squeals and wiggles bad too. If we keep trying to fight her to get the tiny ones off, at some point a head will get left in during the fight to hold her still and get it off at the same time.
Revolution will kill the ones on her and they will fall off. But I cant get that til tomorrow when the vet opens. I dont want my children playing with her (or the other dogs) til we get them off of her.
I just didnt know if there was something safe for 9wk olds for ticks that I can get or use til tomorrow.
The better handwork
Give this puppy some playtime, than her meal, place her on a (outside?) table, settle yourself and go to work: picking off the tick, one by one, and drown the ticks in a bowl of water with dishwasher.
Do it with someone else, one to hold and pet her, the other one to catch the ticks. Make it fun, make it cosy, because you'll have to do it regurlary.
I used to have a white puppy, to come in the house with two cats, and it was covered with fleas in no time. At that time there were no puppyflea products so after spraying the house we picked the fleas off 5 times a day. Never knew there could have been so many fleas on one puppy! By the way, this puppy lived up to a ripe old age, and loved to be groomed after that.
don't use revolution
"Revolution controls tick infestations only due to the American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis), a tick commonly found on dogs. There are other common species of ticks that are not killed or controlled by Revolution"
if the ticks are very small, they are not dog ticks so the revolution won't help. it think frontline or advantix may help with more kinds of ticks (you'll have to look them up) if you are going to use a topical.

ticks ...
Wow ! I'd be pretty upset with a breedeer who handed someone a puppy who was infested with ticks. Are there other puppies there ? Did you let her know ? I haven't had to deal with ticks, even though we lived in the woods, so I don't know how serious it can be for a puppy . I wonder if there is the risk of lymes disease or erlichia . I knwo that when regualr wood ticks are small, it means they haven't ingested a lto of blood becuase they haven't been hanging on for long. But aren't the ticks that carry lymes disease very tiny ticks ?
Document!
I had a friend of mine bring home an Irish wolfhound from the breeder covered in ticks. She attempted to get them out but itwas way to many. They brought the dog to the vet and had all of it documented in case of any health problems down the road down the road, this was a year ago. For the past month the poor dog has been so sick it has spent countless hours at the vet. Of course the dog is part of the family now but my friends want some compensation for what is happenning. They are also currently attempting to file charges and gather more info on this breeder. I would document this if it is as bad as it sounds.
Good Luck!
I've heard pretty scary things about Revolution
