Prolapsed Penis Atten TOM

Good Morning

I believe my dog has a prolapsed penis and he is going to the vet tonight.
I saw your post at the begining of this month to another post. Have you had experience with this issue? Can you give me any insite to what you did? I have read that it needs surgury and I also have read that you should just leave it alone. Can you offer any insite?

Thank you

Tiffany How did you make out with the vet?

Im glad he is doing well

From info I have gathered they can increase and decrease in size but they will not just go away. If you are having him neutered i would just have the tacking prcedure done at the same time It will probably be cheaper. The tacking itself should not be more than $250.00. Also until that is done I would just leave it alone don't keep checking it to see if it is there. If you notice any blood or difficulty urinating that is a different story and like I said yesterday don't go crazy cleaning it only if you notice dirt or any discharge and even then be gentle and just clean around the prepuce. I wish you the best of luck with him and if you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to e mail me.

Vet Visit

Sorry I did not post last night his appointment was at 6:15pm and we did not get in till after 7:00pm cause there was a dog that needed to be seen right away when he walked in. Poor little guy the cutest jet black scottie..

Anyway. His temp was normal and she looked at it but didn't futtz with it at at. She said it was pretty bad and would need surgery. I printed out the article that Elaine told me about re the new procedure and that is the one that they would try first. I told her that I was giving him Cipro since Monday at 125mg BID and she advised next time to go with Cefelexin for a suspected UTI but cirpo was fine. She gave me an estimate on the surgery in which she would neuter him also. I brought him in bed with me and kept him from humping last night. I woke up this morning and changed his diaper and washed him up. When I got to his pee pee I was careful and noticed there was not any pink on the wipe. I took a good look at it and the prolapse that was the size of a plump blueberry and was purple, was gone. There is still evidence of a prolapse but not at all like it was yesterday. I was in shock I even called my son in to show him. I really have tried to keep him busy with toys and belly rubs so he hasn't humped a whole lot in the past 36 hours. That is all I can attribute this too. Tom, i can email you the pic but I am not able to post them here as they are not in Photobucket.

I intend to watch his pee pee and use all the info that you have all given me. I was so scared when I saw his prolapse. You have given me information and piece of mind and very good advice. I will keep you posted and if you have any more information please continue to share with me. I would have taken him in and had them do surgery without even thinking about the complications. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Agree about the cleaning and keeping the area moist

without water...KY jelly is an excellent product for this and its recommended when dogs need help retracting a prolonged erection (as in when mating). happy.gif

Re: A bit more info on Gwylo

In his case the humping may be an issue. My guy never humps. They really have no idea what causes this. Some will say genetics since it really only happens in bullies and some yorkies. Other vets will say it's hormones. The two surgeons I spoke with said they really did not think it was genetics from a pedigree standpoint as much as a breed standpoint. it may have to do with the heavy breathing putting more pressure on the lower abdomen and if the dog is excited that pressure is magnified. I think vets are quick to blame genetics in this breed. It sounds like you are doing everything ok keeping it out of the water. I would not overclean the area though. That area has a way of self cleaning. Surely if there is dirt there then by all means clean it. Just over cleaning can cause that area to dry out which will cause more discomfort. If it seems dry or irritated use a little KY jelly. I do not think the prolapse itself is uncomfortable as I could touch my guys and he could have cared less. Being that he is a SB baby I would be more inclined to leave it alone as long as he is not having any clinical symptoms ie bleeding or difficulty urinating. Please keep us updated.

A bit more info on Gwylo

I will post a pic today. He is also an SB bulldog and has no control over his bladder and bowels. So he is currently wearing a diaper. I adopted him in early Feb of this year. He was scheduled for his pre op check up today for his neuter, but he has to go to his normal vet first to get his pee pee looked at first.

He gets a bath every other day and gets a birdbath (is just a clean up with a warm wash cloth) the other days. I only put enough bath water in the tub to pass his feet so his little penis is not soaking in the bath water. He loves to be naked outside, but he tends to get pee all over himself. But those are always bath days. His diaper is changed every morning then I come home at lunch and change him then again when I come home at 4:30pm and then before bed. I have been checking him and changing him more often since this issue has started. He is a bit freaky when is comes to his humping. He humps EVERYTHING!! Shoes toys, our cat our chihuahua and our 150lb female mastiff, blankets, food and water bowls cups and peoples feet. It seems to be constant the for the past week. Could that be why this has happened to his pee pee? I have him on 125 mg of Ciprofloxacin a day. I started that on Monday 4/27/09. I have also flushed out his sheath around his penis with a bit of warm water. I keep the tip of his pee pee as clean and dry as I can and always put cream in it so it will not get icky.

I also use essential oils on all of my dogs and I have for over a 1.5 years with great success. But with something like this, I want to know exactly what is going on and I do not want him in pain.

Thank you
Tiffany

I would only add that you consider all options before

agreeing to any removal surgery...ie, at Tom's suggestion you might well consider a 'tacking' procedure first if anything at all is needed before any cutting. This is a very vascular area of the anatomy; it can also scar rather easily; an unaltered male or even a neutered young male will frequently show arousal when just excited meeting new people, new pets, new situations, or even responding to your own praise/kind words so some behavior-modification may also be helpful...ie, learning to avoid certain situations that excite him or how to change his focus/attention away to reduce that arousal. happy.gif

thanks Ela1ne I was going to send those tonight

I do have much experience unfortunately

Could you post a pic? I know it sounds weird but if i could see it i could at least tell how bad it is. is it bleeding? Is he having any problems urinating? Elaine has a great deal of experience as well. I would take him in just to get the tissue checked out make sure there is no infection or dying tissue. If there isn't any and your vet says he needs surgery ask which procedure he does. There are actually three different ones. the tacking is the less invasive and seems to work but not for everybody. There is another one similar to the tacking where they use purse string stitches and the final is where they snip the prolapsed tissue. in my opinion i would give the tacking procedure a shot. if it came back again I would leave it alone unless he was having complications. I have some info I can e mail you that was given to me from Elaine. It is on my home computer so I will have to do it later. there is also a very new procedure that has been done with freezing the tissue. Although this seems to be still in it's infancy. I am anxious to hear what your vet has to say. Don't make any decisions just yet about surgery. There are others on here who have dealt with it as well. Please update the post after you see the vet and if you think of anything else just ask. I am more than happy to share everything I have learned.

I just sent you two very informational emails...

one was written by Melanie, a frequent contributor here and knowledgable breeder/exhibitor/bulldog owner; the other is an informative article written by a veterinary specialist on this subject, from a recovery standpoint. HTH
