~Progesterone Testing~ which one is better to do???

I spoke with my vet today about Progesterone Testing, he explained that there is two ways it could be done. One was by taking blood and sending it in (getting the results later that day or the next day for certain) or by doing a vaginal smear (and receive the results on spot).

He explained that they both start on day 7 (after bleeding begins). and with taking the blood progesterone test we would only have to do this once he said but possibly twice depending. But he said that the test would tell us what day she will ovulate. But I don't understand how doing one test will tell me she ovulates in 10 days? I didn't think this was the way it all worked when I researched it but I didn't question him about it.

Then he mentioned vaginal smear, he said it starts on day 7 also and would have to be done every two days until she is close to ovulation.

The vaginal smear is cheaper but would come to the same if I did two progesterone blood tests.

My question is, should I go with vaginal smears? or the blood progesterone testing? Which one is best and is more accurate?

This is all new to me, so it gets quite confusing when learning what's what and where to go. I've been drowning in research and...my brain library needs organization...lol. I would love to hear what you think and if you could share a bit of your knowledge with me to help guide me in the best direction I should be taking.

Many thank yous,
Natacha

Do it yourself

Why not test your dog yourself, with the over the counter ovulation kits that you can buy at the drug store? I bought 7 tests (in 1 box) for $15.00. It detects the rise in LH, and ovulation occurs in 24 hours. Get your dogs up and on a leash, first thing in the morning and when she squats to pee, put the stick in the stream. (It works like a pregnancy test) I would start testing on day 5 after she starts bleeding, and test every morning until you get a positive. Then breed her on day 2 and 4, if you are using fresh semen.

Progesterone testing IS the most accurate way to test for ovulation. Smears are not as accurate.

I thought the

5ncg's was the # for LH surge and marked ovulatio. then eggs are released and start their journey down the fallopian tubes where they are maturing also and are ready to be fertilized when they make it to the uterus.

If only I was as good a person as my dogs seem to think I am!

progesterone testing

Hi Natacha,
I have just gone through this, my vet did both the smears and the progesterone. More because I wanted to see the progress of the smear. The smear isn't accurate and is considered "outdated". With the progesterone, we started on day 4 and went every other day because this was the first breeding for this girl... if they go by the book, you can start on day 7. On day 7 my girl was at 1.74 which means she was about the hit the LH surge (2.0), we did another blood test the next day and she hit her 2. Once they hit 2, they usually ovualate within 2 days. My girl was right on and then ovulated 2 days later and we knew exactly which day was the best to inseminate.
I would definitely go with the progesterone testing. I did 5 of them in total but I started early as I didn't want to miss it if she wasn't going "by the book" so to speak.

Hope that helps.

You're correct!

The 5ng marks ovulation but the LH surge is marked at 2.0 and it's usually 2 days later that they hit the 5ng and ovulate and then you inseminate 2 days (or 3 depending on vets) giving the time for the eggs to ripen!
