We just found out this past weekend that our five year old O.E.B. most likely has breast cancer. Needless to say, my head is spinning and I am struggling to breathe...I have been reading and researching on the web all weekend long.
I have an appointment today with the surgeon to find out what our course of treatment will be and then after that I have a follow up appointment with a different vet for a second opinion.
I would love to hear from anyone who has been through this or is having a similar experience.
We went through this with my parents' rottweiler...
She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 after having mastitis (sp?) and some bloody discharge from her nipples. It was a scary experience, but they were able to remove most (if not all) of the affected tissue. She is 10 years old now and is still going strong. I know that she is not a bulldog, but I just thought I would provide a story of hope since you are going through a difficult situation. I hope everything works out well for you!

Betty had it too
She was a puppy mill bitch. I've heard the more they were bred, or longer intact, the more probable. We think she's 10 or so now. But she had lumps and we did lumpectomies and she recovered quickly. I give her a full breast exam, which she loves, frequently, and whenever another pops up, even if teeny, I know it's new because I know every lump and bump, she goes in for another lumpectomy and handles them well with a local, rather than going under.

Did you have a biopsy diagnosis? My cat Meeper did and hers was more of a lump with lines leaving it, you could feel the tendrils it sent out. So they did a full radical mastectomy of two breasts and lymph nodes nearby and the muscle tissue down to the ribs. She recovered quickly and lived for several more years and it never came back.

Re: just talked to daddy...
What beautiful dogs!!! I love that you did the BC walk, Abbey and I are doing the relay for life here in our state...
Well good news, we went to see the surgeon today and she feels really hopeful about Abbey Road's recovery and said that she will be back at life in no time.
I am so glad that Mable is fine, it gives me hope.

just talked to daddy...
Mabel had about 6 inches of breast tissue and 2 nipples removed...she has also had part of tail removed and lump taken from her leg...she has gone thru the wholke gamut of lumpy cancer removal surgeries..she is absolutely fine, but she is old (she was probably 8 when i fostered her and my neighbor adopted her) she is 10 now...partially deaf, partially blind...but sweet and sassy as ever and NO lasting negative effects from cancer or surgery. Me and Wyatt even did the breast cancer walk with Mabel.

if you look closely, you can see her "survivor" pink ribbon on her collar

my personal experience
was not with a bulldog but a toy poodle. We inherited a 6 year old toy poodle when my Aunt died. The bitch had been bred 4 times and was 6 years old when we got her. She developed large lumps (walnut size) in her breasts I believe when she was 7 or 8. I had the vet remove them and her nipple as well. That was all we did. She did fine in her recovery and lived to the ripe old age of 13.
I beleive most breast cancers in dogs are slow or less agressive cancers. This was probably 15 years ago when she passed away so medical treatments may have changed.
good luck and so sorry to hear you have to deal with this.
