Rocco woke up this morning happy as can be, I took some pix (see before)...we just took him out for a walk and when he came in I noticed his eye is rolled back in his head and the white covering is showing more prominently from the bottom. (See After)
Any thoughts on what the heck could have caused this in the span of 5-10 minutes? Can this be an allergy? He doesn't seem like he's in pain when I go to touch around it.
Thanks for any and all help.

Yes correct
Visine is not a lubricant and should not be used as one. That part i understand because its a vasocontrictor.
Refresh and Gentel are eye lubricants..so all they do is lubricate and cleanse the eye. But that dogs eye doesnt look like it has a problem with dry eye. It looks like inflammation of the lower conjuntival sac-an allergy to something or even a clogged duct- so either of those would to clean out the eye or saline..considering the above two are made up of a sodium based product anyway.
So maybe just a saline flush would be the best for this dog to just clean out the eye, actually cheaper than Refresh or Gentel.

Thank you for finding that information Elaine.
I haven't had time the past couple of days to research any of it. Thank you for the helpful links though:-) I'm careful about what I give my girls.....and want to be VERY informed when it is something I am putting into their eyes!!

I was told by an opthamologist to only use Refresh Celluvisc
because it has no preservatives.

I was told
I was always told not to use Visine because it burns their eyes, to use Tears Natural. That is what I have used on my dogs for years.

This is what I found online..
This site says "tetrahydrolazine" is bad for dogs...

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_use_Visine_in_a_dog%27s_eye
This site says it should not be used because it's not therapeutic. It just gets the red out. It doesn't say it's harmful.

I suppose there could be reasons to use it for showing, but it serves no purpose to help the eye like other lubricants like Genteal and Refresh Liquigel.

Not sure:-) My vet said don't get the regular visine...
May be he meant just for this particular case? I don't know about using it otherwise. Now I gotta go ask my doc about that!

interesting..I use refresh liquigel and Gentel
and have put both of them in my eyes and they still burn my eyes and they are just lubricants so I often wonder if my crew feels the same when i use them on them..
I also prefer Naphcon over the Visine brand- that one they dont seem to have a problem with an noone fights me when i use it, go figure.

rocco
It looks like he could have been bitten by something. My shar-pei got bitten by a mosquito and his eye really swelled up. Try and take a picture that is more head on so you can see his full face.

Yes, those are good drops too!
I use that in place of visine sometimes for myself!

umm curious why everyone keeps saying to not use Visine
on a dogs eye? Regular Visine is made up of potassium choloride and tetrahydrolazine hydrocholoide. Tetrahydrolazine is a vasoconstrictor which is how it "gets the red out" of eyes by contricting the vessels. It is often used in dogs all he time before they enter the ring to "get the red out" or when a dog is excesivly tesring during allergy season. It has alwasys been my understanding that it is ok to use Visine but should not be used to treat dry eye- because its a vasoconstrictor and will make the eyes dryer. But in the case of allergies- it is ok to use?
Guess this is another one of those things i am going to ask the vet about and then the pharmacist and then ten million other people so i can figure it out like i did with the neosporin for eyes- which BTY has been working wonders for everyones eyes now. Heck i am still on the first tube and with BNP I went through 5 tubes in 1 week!

Visine DRY EYE drops or gel...
Don't use regular Visine please! Or you can purchase Terramycin from most pet stores and put about a 1/4 inch line in the eye twice daily to keep it lubricated well until the swelling goes down.

Not his eyeball--that is fine
it is the lower conjuctiva that has become swollen and inflamed. Probably an allergic reaction to something in the air or he has rubbed his face. I would give Benedryl for the allergy and some visine drops for the eye. Hopefully this won't develop into cherry eye.
