Poor Mason...

Well Mason went back to the vet today and the staph infection or rather bacterial infection is still present. He has been on Novolexin since April 28th and now the vet has changed him to Bioclav for 1 week. Yogurt twice a day as he has been on meds for a few weeks now. If this new stuff doesn't get rid of the infection he is going to scrap his skin. I am so upset. Mason has his first show on the 29th of May and if this stuff doesn't go away he can't be in the show.
I am so upset for him, I am hoping he is not uncomfortable and the vet said he shouldn't be.
This is getting expensive!! He is so worth it but it's frustrating..My poor guy..

update on Mason

Hello there, Mason has no red or pick on his face today..yay!! This new stuff seems to be working.

Yesterday I took him to the pet store and he ate a treat they gave him and his muzzle turned pink quickly. The treat was chicken flavor so I am sensing that might be one thing he is sensitive too. Chicken is the main thing in his old food...hense "Chicken soup for the pat lovers soul" lol.

He does get washed with special soap as suggested by the vet in response to the last poster. I am not sure what its called but it seems to work good.

Keeping my fingers crossed for my buddy and keeping him away from chicken..LMAO. Thanks for listening..I shall update soon.

May I ask...

Did your vet recommend anything topical - like Maleseb shampoo? It can take weeks to detoxify from a food (if this is a result of a food allergy). When one of my dogs came to me, he had a terrible skin and coat condition. Good food and malaseb baths every few days really helped him a lot!
I agree with Jacinda. If the condition didn't improve with a broad spectrum antibiotic, I would have preferred a targeted med. Hopefully, this one will do the trick.
Good luck in the show!

I would have a problem with your Vet

I don't like Vet's that "think" they know what's wrong with your dog and give you medicine they "think" will help. You have to go back multiple times before they run tests that will tell them exactly what's wrong with your dog. All this adds up to a lot of money. I have been to Vets like this before and I do not use them now.

Now, I'm not saying the Vet should do a bunch of unnecessary tests but a skin scrape in my opinion should have been done on the first or maybe second Vet visit. I think your Vet sees your bulldog and sees $$$$$.

skin scrape

I think I mentioned in my post he is doing that next. Other vets here said they don't do the scraping right away when there are strong signs of food allergies. I just changed his food completely so it should be fine at this point. I did say the scrapping was next in my post though.

Has he ever had a skin scraping?

If he's never had his skin scraped, how is the Vet diagnosing him? If I took my dog to the bulldog Vet with a possible staph infection or really any type of skin problem, the FIRST thing he would do is a skin scrape.

A skin scrape is simple, painless and a good way to determine the problem.
