Poor Mason :(

Mason's staph infection is back like I mentioned before however this time its worse then before. He was given novolexin today for 21 days to clear it up., I am thinking that the staph infection is because of his food. He first got a staph infection about 2 weeks after I switched his food from IAMS (that is what the breeder was feeding him. I switched to Chicken Soup for the pet lover soul: Large breed puppy.
He is doing great on it except for the staph infection. I know its worse this time because he is itchier then last time and at times has scratched his skin raw. Poor guy...
So I am seriously wondering if it is his food, even though he does so well on it, other then the staph infection.
I am thinking of changing him to pacific stream TOTW but I am concerned as this is not really puppy food and Mason is only 5 months old.Has anyone fed this to their pups? if so what formula?
or Do I just wait and not change his food yet and see? THe food really is the only thing I can think of that really makes any sense.

Please...any comments would be greatly welcomed. Thanks

We fed our 3 month old pup TOTW...but

He continues to throw it up. We loved TOTW Pacific Stream, and really hate to change him, but we can't let him keep throwing it up. We are actually going to be switching him to Merrick Puppy Plate today. Good luck with TOTW, it's a really awesome food, but just isn't working for our boy. Finding the right food is very exhausting!

Change his food and commit to the new food for 4wks

unless he vomits or gets diarrhea. There may be some adjustment in bowels with a change-over but you need to give the new food a chance to work. As for him being 5mos old, that is not so very young and some do change from puppy food to adult formulas at 6mos, others feed an adult or all-stage food at an earlier age than Mason.

Are you doing anything topically to give him relief in addition to the oral medication? Do you use any anti-itch spray? When you bathe him are you using any medicated shampoo? Does he sweat alot from lying on leather furniture or similar? Staph seems to flourish in warm moist conditions too. It shouldn't hurt anything to dust his body (especially his belly and armpits) with Gold Bond Medicated Powder to help deter the scratching. I have not used Calm Coat products but some have said they were successful for their dogs...look at what they offer in terms of anti-itch spray (check Home Page). Hope he feels better very soon!

At 5mos he may also be teething, which may add some stress to his current problems too. If so, try freezing wet twisted washcloths and give him those to chew on, for relief. happy.gif
