Poor Mason :(

Mason's staph infection is back like I mentioned before however this time its worse then before. He was given novolexin today for 21 days to clear it up., I am thinking that the staph infection is because of his food. He first got a staph infection about 2 weeks after I switched his food from IAMS (that is what the breeder was feeding him. I switched to Chicken Soup for the pet lover soul: Large breed puppy.
He is doing great on it except for the staph infection. I know its worse this time because he is itchier then last time and at times has scratched his skin raw. Poor guy...
So I am seriously wondering if it is his food, even though he does so well on it, other then the staph infection.
I am thinking of changing him to pacific stream TOTW but I am concerned as this is not really puppy food and Mason is only 5 months old.Has anyone fed this to their pups? if so what formula?
or Do I just wait and not change his food yet and see? THe food really is the only thing I can think of that really makes any sense.

Please...any comments would be greatly welcomed. Thanks

I thought the only way to confirm staph was through a scraping

Anything else would just be an educated guess.

Responses to all questions :)

good morning,

No scrappings have been done yet but the vet said he would if the infection does not clear up this time or if it comes back. He said it could be a few different things. I think the food is a good start as the food he is on has many protein sources (Thanks ML)

Mason gets washed with anti-bacterial shampoo and conditioner, face washed with meidcated wipes at the moment because he has scratched the skin raw in spots. I have his nails cut and then I file them so they are not sharp and his tummy is wiped down after every potty trip with an unscented babywipe.

Oh and the crate is wiped each day and a fresh towel given to him to lay on.

I do have leather couches but don't notice him really sweating. I clean these due to shedding almost daily.

I don't really know what else to do for him. He sits on my lap (yes he thinks he is a lap dog...hehe) and I gently scrath his back, tummy and head for him. I am going to try the goldbond powder maybe or benedril tablets so the poor guy is not so itchy.
He is his normal happy self aside from the itching.

Tonight a trip to the pet store for new food and powder...

Are you sure it's staph?

I've had two dogs with staph and they did not itch. I would have his skin scraped to make sure it's not something else. I've fed TOTW pacific stream to my last two puppies and they did fine on it. I now use Nature's Variety Venison.

TOTW is an all life stages food...

You can feed it to your puppy thoughout his adulthood. I used TOTW Pacific Stream.

We use TOTW pacific stream and...

our guys do great on it, thick coats, no tear stains, no allergies. Just curious, has your vet done a scraping for demodex?

no, don't use it any longer...

I didn't want to "slam" TOTW but since you asked...I emailed and called TOTW because I heard that there was the possibility that TOTW has Ethoxyquin in it. I never got a reply to my email and got the run around on the phone. Therefore, I came to my own conclusion that they were "hiding" something. My dogs are on Flint River Ranch Fish and Chips and they love it. It is one of the very few dog foods that has NEVER had a recall. All the ingredients in the food are human grade. It is very convenient because we live in a rural area and Flint River offers an auto ship service and the dog food is delivered right to my door at any interval I decide on.
