Please help and give advice asap!

My male Toby is right at 6 months old and today we noticed that he has this (in pics) all over his body! He has been outside 3 times today.I do not think he has been stung. Called the vet and they said to give him 1 tsp. of benadryl for 15 pounds so I gave him 3 tsp. (45 lbs) He was not like this this morning, and I would like to know if any of your bullies has had this and what is the best way to treat him. Our girl, Chloe has never had this to happen so I am freaking out about my baby! Could it be allergies and if so, does he need meds from the vet? I will be calling the vet back later if it does not go down/away. Thanks to all of you that will answer!!!

Also my hubby said it looks like red hives to him....Tanya and Family

Thanks to you all!

You all helped calm me down! Thanks, Toby has been seen by the vet and we still have no idea what the actual cause is/was, but he is doing better. After waiting 3 hours to be worked in, they gave my boy a steroid shot and antibiotics in case it was a snake/red ant/spider bite. Nothing has been changed in the yard, food, etc etc but we hope it never comes back! Toby did great at the docs and doing better ....... Thanks again to everyone who helped me, it all helped to make him feel so much better!

I should have mentioned...

The last time Maggie, my Boxer had the hives (just a couple of months ago) Benedryl didn't give her any relief. My vet told us to switch to Tavist D and it helped her faster than Benedryl ever did. I'm sorry but I don't remember the dosage amount but I bet your vet could tell you.

hope the benadryl helps. I think tomorrow I'd be at the vets office if I were you.

Look for changes

Look for changes in your dog's environment. Have you recently done anything in your yard? We had a dog breakout in hives from walking in cedar chips that we had just used in landscaping our yard. Good luck.

Definitely HIVES. My Boxer has a very sensitive system...

she once got hives from eating a few potato chips! You just never know what they might have a reaction to. We used Benedryl, as well. By the way, Toby and Chloe are adoraBULL!

Thanks Jacinda!

I will definitely ask the vet about the steroids.... As of now it seems to be going down and everything is working so far. Thanks for all the useful info!

He may need steroids

I know when I had hives, I was miserable. Benadryl didn't help much and I finally had a steroid shot and prednisone. The steroid shot gave me almost immediate relief.

Thanks Elaine!

Will keep a check on him and also get him in the tub! I know I have some Aveeno bath oatmeal I had used for my son when he had poison ivy, may use that too! Thanks again!

It does indeed look like hives

and it could be from many sources. The important thing to watch is his breathing...if he's breathing normally, ie, not acting like his tongue is swollen and he's finding difficulty breathing or drawing in a good deep breath, then its an Emergency...otherwise the Benadryl should help bring the hives down...may need to repeat dose in 6-8hrs. You can also try a cool (not cold) bath to rinse off any contact chemicals he may have come in contact with in the yard/outside, and to just relieve any skin itching/discomfort. Don't panic...they usually look a whole lot worse than the dog feels.
