Hey all, tank has started shedding a lot so we've begun to use the furminator on him. It has been getting out a LOT of hair. We noticed as we were brushing him that he has this patch on his back where his reddish, more coarse hair, seems to be coming out leaving only his undercoat. Please see picture below, the patch is right in the middle of his back between his shoulders (much more apparent in person)... beyond giving him fish oil (which we started doing) should we be worried and is there anything else to do?? Thanks!!
First off...
I would hold off on the furminator for a bit. This may be seasonal alopecia (see above - Onslowsmom posted a link). Fish oil caps sure won't hurt, and I would definitely start them.

Some have also reported good result with the calm coat products. I don't know if they're effective with the seasonal alopecia, though. Sorry I couldn't make any other suggestions.

The beginning stages....
Sounds like the beginning stages of Seasonal Flank Alopecia. Our Sammy started to have a "thinning" coat last spring and it quickly escalated to full hair loss by the summer. The skin beneath is dark black and this spring the area around the bald spots began to thin as well. The vet has put him on melatonin, 3mg twice a day, but that hasn't helped us out yet. May be worth trying it to catch it in the early stages. Good luck!
