My Lacey had a c-section and then had to be opened back up for an emgergency spaying due to excessive bleeding. This was 6 days ago and since we returned home she is panting alot like she is hot and thristy. She is eating and drinking. When I give her ice she seems to stop for awhile but then starts back up. Is this normal? Thanks for your help!
agree......no aspirin products
my guy is recovering from repair of torn ACL and cannot tolerate any type of narcotics. this was discussed in great length about his sensitivity to anethesia and drugs in general.
so for him he was given an epidural and placed very gingerly under anethesia and even with that he still had some minor post-op symptoms such as panting, pacing, and anxiety which lasted for 48 hours. Being that he cannot tolerate Tylenol #3 and nalbuphine injections he is on plain tylenol 325 mg., every 8 hours for pain management and doing well.
Im sooo glad her babies r okay!
So her milk didnt come in yet?
Don't forget to entertain a stranger,For by doing so some have entertained Angels without knowing it!Hebrews:13-14

No milk yet
No, her milk still has not come down. Her puppies are still sucking but not getting anything.
this is normal
it will make you crazy for a few days, DONT GIVE HER ASPIRIN, she just had surgery it will thin the blood. She is nursing her babies, you dont want anything going to them.
Vicky
I would give her an adult asprin...She
sounds like a very upset and nervous Mother and a nervous Mother is not going to let her milk down and settle down to care for her babies..Keep EVERYONE away from her and her babies. NO company, NO visitors, No neighbors or children to visit the babies..Just you, her and the babies. If she's nesting a week after she's had the babies she is most likely trying to find a place to hide them or cover them to protect them from whatever she feels is a threat to them. She's had a hard week and now it's time to slow down and help her relax. If your upset, she's going to sense it and not settle down. Low calming light, maybe some soft soothing music and you within her site reading a book or resting quietly.
Temp
Her temp is fine. I checked it about an hour ago, it was 101.2 and she is nesting alot.
Panting
Yes, her litter is fine, 2 females. I really hope that you are right and her milk comes down soon. Thanks for asking.
agree, also just to be sure
check her temp.
They pant, nest and dig holes.
Anesthesia can cause this behavior...
my girl did the same thing panted alot after her c-section, the vet told me it can be a side affect of being put under.
Normally bitches pant after birth.. to bring down the milk!
Its usually within the few days on and off!
Im sorry shes been through a lot..Was her litter okay?
No pain medicine
No the only medicine he gave her was an antibiotic. Do you know if it would be alright to give her a baby aspirin until I can call the vet tomorrow?
Re: Panting alot after C-section
Did the Vet give her any pain meds? Sounds as if she hurts.
Quandry...aspirin will help with pain, but its a blood-thinner
and since she has her second surgery because of excessive bleeding I'm reluctant to have you give her anything that could complicate the clotting/healing from that procedure.
A pain medication is definitely called for and if the vet won't send home 2-3 days worth of pills, at least take her by to get a shot (which will last about 12hrs). Shame on this vet for not knowing that the dog would need something for surgery twice in such a short time...that's why she's panting! If cool compresses would provide some comfort, try those...or even a heating pad on low...anything that might help her to settle down this evening/tomorrow morning until you can get some meds for her.
