Our 3 yr old was just diagnosed with cancer

I've never written on a post, but am reaching out. Our 3 yr old male bulldog, Bodie, was just diagnosed with cancer. They aren't even sure what kind, they say it isn't following any text books. It is either Lyphoma or Leukemia. I am so lost and so confused and in the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I've never dealt with anything like this. Currently, he is on chemo at WSU Veterinary Hospital. I am desperate to keep Bodie alive. He has always been such a happy healthy boy. He is the absolute love of our lives. It came on so suddenly, we had no idea, he was sick. I am not even sure what my question is. I will never allow him to suffer, but I so, so, want more time with him.

So sorry!

So sorry to hear about your boy. It's dreadful. I'm in a similar situation and the thing that's helped me is knowing that there are cases where our beloved dogs do well in these situations. There is a great yahoo group called canine cancer comfort that you might want to check out.

best wishes,
heather

Re: I'm so sorry. I know that helpless feeling well.

Thank you.. I know only another bully family could understand this pain.

Re: One thing to add...

Thanks for the additional information re: vaccines... I was just telling my husband that I want to get Bodie on a really good diet, thank you for the input there too.

Re: We lost our Oscar to lymphoma...

Thank you for responding. No, Bodie does not have enlarged lymphnodes. That is one of the baffling things. Honestly, I am not sure what type of chemo he is on as they just changed it today. I am so numb, I hardly hear what they are telling me. He is getting amazing care at WSU, and I will be forever grateful to them. Thanks again for your kind words

I'm so sorry. I know that helpless feeling well.

I lost my first bully to two types of cancer two years ago....he wasn't even 2 years old yet. It came on very fast & was very aggressive..they didn't even know what it was until multiple biopsies later. It was very heartbreaking because we couldn't even treat the cancers...it was too far spread. I will pray for you & your bully.

Cancer

I am so terribly sorry to hear about your diagnosis of cancer in your baby. I have posted this many times on here. Our boy was 4 when he was diagnosed with stage 5 lymphoma, meaning it was everywhere. He was never acting sick and I found it by accident. Anyway, it was devistating news and we did a lot of crying. But like you, we started chemo and I am forever grateful that we did. We were able to give him another wonderful year and for about 99%of that year he acted and felt great. He did wonderfully with the chemo. Only one drug gave him very bad diarrhea and so we did not use that drug again, but for the most part he did great. He went into remission very quickly and held it for sometime. Eventually though, the cancer starts to grow again. We tried some more chemo but once we saw that it was not really working we opted to stop and keep him comfortable, but this was after about 11 months.
Unfortunatley the cancer was making it difficult to breathe and we had to make the terrible choice to say good by. It is one of the hardest things we have ever done, but it was all about him and his comfort.
If you haven't done so already, I would encourage you to read all you can about the different chemo protocols. There is a lot of information out there. Also, it is a good idea to make sure he has a good diet and perhaps even some supplements. My oncologist recommended several things for our dog during his chemo treatments. It is a terrible thing when they are diagnosed so young. Chemo is a personal choice and not for everyone, but we felt we had to at least try and I am very glad that we did because we gave him another year and as I said, for the majority of that year, you would never have known that he was even sick. I will keep you in my prayers and I wish you luck with your treatments on your baby.

One thing to add...

don't ever get him vaccinated again and also, try to get him on a low carb, high protein diet (carbs and sugar tend to feed the cancer.)

We lost our Oscar to lymphoma...

when he was 6. He was on chemo for 8 months and most of those months were good ones. What kind of chemo is he on? Does he have enlarged lymph nodes in his neck? Did they do an aspirate? It's such a hard thing to go through, I knew when Oscar was diagnosed that my time with him would be a lot shorter than I had planned on. There are two groups on yahoo that are really good: one is Lymphomaheartdogs which is for lymphoma dogs on chemo and the other is Pets with Cancer. They are very helpful and knowledgeable and sometimes it helps just to talk with someone who is going through it. Prayers for your baby, if I can help at all, please let me know.

OMGosh. I am so sorry.

There are really no words to take away your pain. I, too would be devastated if one of my babies had cancer. I will keep your beloved Bodie in my thoughts and all my prayers. I truly hope the chemo rids him completely of the cancer and he lives a long and healthy life.
