Many have had success with soaking in either a diluted bleach solution or Epsom salts solution, and then treating with some topical medication...either Panalog, Neosporin with anti-itch, Prep H, or simply wetting well with cotton balls soaked in cider vinegar. It won't go away overnight with these treatments but you should see improvement in just a few days. If your vet feels this needs oral antibiotics he/she will Rx one course of them, but you still may want to do some topical treatment to hurry the healing along.
