Ok I am stumped now

Ok so Mason is off the meds now after 2 months, new food, no treats unless they are salmon/fish based, fruits or vegetables or yogurt. However...at night he has little red and pink allergy bumps on him. I give him benadryl (sp) allergy and it goes away. I don't have to do this everynight but 3 nights the last week. I wonder if he is now allergic to bananas? Is that possible? he could eat them before, he loves them...He eats the same thing everyday??
After he eats his kibble he is fine. he eats in the am and again at 5pm and no pink bumps but then some night late in the evening he gets the bumps..

Or is it just that his little body needs time to adjust to nt being on meds? I am taking him backt o the vet this afternoon...

Really? I asked her...

if that was really necessary and she said yes. I was a little upset over that cause I hate to take Cain off of the Zyrtec for that long since he chews his paws raw sad.gif

Hm, I will have to look into this now.

thanks Jacinda!

I believe she said it was blood....

if we go to a doggie dermatologist the cost increases 4 times because then they do all the testing which I believe includes skin scraping.

Hey Annie

I don't believe you need to skip allergy meds if you have a blood test to check for allergies. Of you will need to if you do the skin testing.

what kind of testing?

Is this a blood test or a skin scraping test? I'm not sure what labs you use in Canada. We had blood testing done through Spectrum labs in the US and Dozer was able to stay on his allergy meds. I know VARL testing also allows you to stay on the meds. That was the reason we chose to do the blood test rather than the skin testing. There was just no way Dozer could be off his meds for the length of time required for skin testing. Good luck to you!

I feel your pain!

Dozer is allergic to our grass as well. He'll walk out on the deck and just stare at the grass. You can tell he just doesn't want to step in it!

Sounds like Contact

dermatitis. Could be the grass or any fertiziler you have used, or pollen. Anything his skin is in contact with.

They can allergic to anything, just like we can!

Sophie is allergic to the grass in the south. Not sure what it is, but every time she has to go out to potty, she comes back with red, itchy feeties and runny eyes. I am gonna be so glad to get her out of here!!! My other dogs do okay with the grass, but not Sophia. Poor girl HATES going out to potty...

are you in ontario?

or better yet near Toronto?

I just asked my vet about allergy testing since Cain is...

obviously allergic to something. My vet charges $250 for the testing and I would do the injections at home.

Only downfall, no allergy meds for 6 weeks prior to testing since they can change the results of the testing. sad.gif

I am willing to do it because I am not sure if Cain is allergic to a food or grass!

good ideas

I tried the soap and softner one so i have that in check with bounce sheets. He doesn't get the bumps after being in his bed or anything (I line his crate with a towel or blanket each day).

The carpet I will change the carpet cleaner , I didn't try that one yet. If it was the carpet would it not be there every time he lays on it (he does this alot)lol. he doesn't get tis every day that is why I am confused adn am wondering if its just his body getting use to what is going in him and what is around him now that there is no meds?

Fabric softener can cause allergic reactions...

what you use to clean your carpet can too. Our boy Oscar would break out in hives if he walked into a room with something washed in Tide, he didn't even need to touch it. Also bug spray (we had to eliminate the exterminator's visits). Before going to the expense of testing, I would eliminate the fabric softener, use hypoallergenic detergent, sometimes you can figure it out that way.

I don't know

I don't know if its food or not. I have to ask the vet tonight. I have never heard of one being allergic to carpet? wow didn't think that was possible. I know I clean his things with mild soup and fabric softner and rise 3 times just incase..I guess the testing might be the next idea. Does anyone reading this know how much it costs?

is there a way to tell if its the food or something around him?

Are you sure it's a food allergy?

Maybe he's allergic to something in his environment, grass, carpet, bedding, etc.
