Odd scooting behavior

Sorry so long......
Our boy Ozzy, has been scooting for a couple of days now. It almost looks like he is chasing his tail. Yesterday he was doing it and got spooked and let out a yelp as if he was stepped on and then the rug was wet. He had an erection and was salivating and really sniffing the wet spot. When I cleaned up the damp spot on the rug it smelled fishy. I thought it was probably his anal gland expressed. I cleaned his tail pocket real good and it didn't seem to bother him. Today he is still scooting or chasing but it isn't his butt.
He was neutered in the begining of November and his poor wilted scrotum sack is all irritated from scooting. I put some balmex on it and he seems to be doing well. As he scoots, he gets a small erection and licks the air or grunts. At first I thought maybe his scar was itchy or something.
Has anyone ever seen this behavior?

Seems fine now. We will keep and eye on his butt! LOL! Thx SO mu

For a few days

Hi! Mine scooted for about 3 days after and then has been okay since. I guess I would re-check at the vet if the scooting continues, they can impact or get infected also.

How long does it take to stop scooting?

Went to a local vet last night and got his anal gland done ($20. around here)
He is still scooting but not as much. His poop is nice and healthy - no worms. The vet said he may scoot for a couple more days even after being expressed. Does anyone else's still scoot after it is emptied?
There wasn't much in there because the scoot & yelp part he did all by himself the other day.
He didn't scoot after it was done a few months ago so I am really watching him and keeping him clean and dry. I am still not completely convinced he is OK.
put on some preparation H and he seemed good all night. That took care of any swelling from irritation.
Thanks for all the great advice!

Sonds like his anal sacs

Hi! Our male bulldog Rocky just went through this behavior about a month ago, he was "scooting" and licking the air, and there is a fishy smell left on the rug and it is his anal sacs. We took him to our vet and they were totally full. I asssumed originally he was just enjoying the itching. He was also red around the anus from itching on the rug. It only took a few mintues to empty them and cost $10, which I thought was cheap. He hasn't gone through this behavior since. Oh, he also would have an erection. Some people routinely take their dog monthly for this, some only need it once or twice a year. Good luck!

worms are a possibliltiy nm

Re: Odd scooting behavior

Thanks everyone who responded. He is still scooting. The earliest vet appt. is later today. He can't be comfortable so I just gave him a bottom shower with warm water. He seemed to enjoy it. I really apprectiate all your help!

Sounds like an anal sac infection

I think he needs to be seen by the vet if this continues beyond day 3...even tho he's getting some expression (leakage) from the anus due to his rubbing, he sounds like there's more going on in there and it should be looked at. He may need some oral antibiotics if there's infection, as well as having the sacs professionally expressed (emptied). Your description of the "fishy odor" is tell-tale of the anal gland oils. And you might consider using Prep H rather than Balmex for his anus!

Rooney has to have his glands expressed every 1-2 months...the v

that his are down pretty low, making it almost impossible for him to express them himself with firm stools. He HATES having it done, but always stops scooting and tail chasing afterward. When he starts it up, I know it's time for a little trip to the vet!

re behavior

If it were me, I would have him checked - he could have an infection in the anal gland that is making him crazy. Or his tail pocket might itch. But it is definitely odd behavior. Oscar had an infected gland months ago and he would stop and look at it and sometimes rub it on something.

Is he pooping ok?

If so, it might be his anal glands needing to be emptied. My Alex has been doing that for the last couple of days, too. I've been thinking he needs to go to the vet for that.
