Greetings all,
My wife and I have had our bulldog, Rocco, for about 3 weeks now, he's 13 weeks old.
I've never had a dog at all, so this is all new to me, I apologize in advance if these questions are dumb.
I need to know if the following are normal puppy behaviors, or I am doing something wrong..
1. Rocco bites our feet and hands incessantly. No amount of scolding makes him stop. And he bites hard! I wonder if I have made him feel like it's ok to bite? Or is he teething or something?
2. Rocco will pee his crate 2-3x a week. We get up with him at 2AM and 5AM to take him out and his last wakeful pee is 11PM. So he knows he's supposed to go outside, we don't have accidents during the day...only at night.
3. Rocco Poops about 6x a day. I feed him 2 cups of Iams per the instructions and a "few" treats. Seems like a lot of poops to me...
Thanks for any and all input...appreciate it!
-Joe
Good point
Poor Rocco was diagnosed with Giardia and has been on meds for 2 weeks. He had blood in his stool which has cleared up in the last few days...so maybe that's the cause?
About the "proper food", is there a specific part of the message board I should be looking in?
Again, I appreciate the thoughtful and informative posts.

For the teething...
We had teething issues. Our breeder suggested we took a wash cloth, wet it, tied it in a knot and froze it. George would LOVE IT. It gave him something to chew on and the cold felt good to him!

Yes
Giardia can cause bloody stool. I would definitely start boiling his water and be careful where you allow him to drink (water puddles, public dishes are a bad idea). If you search through old posts, food is a subject that comes up often.
Good luck

welcome! There are no "stupid questions" if you really want an answer (or several answers) so feel free to ask anytime. I am in agreement with the other responses you received. I would elaborate a bit by saying that when you shout "NO!" to your biting pup, its similar to a BARK which is what his mother would do, so don't be afraid to frighten him. That doesn't mean you continue to shout, for when you give the 'no' you also want to move yourself or the pup away...and many feel this is an excellent time to shove an acceptable biting object (toy, old knotted sock, etc.) into his face to distract him from your feet (which are animated, moving, therefore more exciting play) so you may need to wiggle the toy around to get his interest.

Some here have had success with a product called "Bitter Apple Spray" which is available at most pet supply stores. Its okay to spray on hands/feet/furniture legs/etc. and many dogs will then back away...but not all of them! We don't recommend using things like "hot pepper sauce" because it can choke a bulldog and with their natural challenges to breathing you wouldn't want to do anything that causes choking or coughing.
As for accidents inside the crate at night, you should be able to take away the water one hour after the evening meal, so if dog gets fed at 6pm, pickup at 7. That allows him time to drink enough to soften the food in his belly and get digestion started. As for the multiple poops, 6 is too many. Some youngsters will poop one time for every meal they eat, so expecting that he's getting 2-3 meals a day, its customary to see the corresponding piles. If you decide to change his food brand, please use the recommended change-over: feed 1/4 new and 3/4 amount of old for 2-3 days, then half & half for another 2-3 days. If all goes well at this point, then continue the last change-over of 3/4 new and 1/4 old for 2-3 days. This transition avoids diarrhea, and allows you to monitor how the dog does on this new food as well. I suggest you buy the smalles bag you can, to try it, and then if its acceptable, only purchase enough to be consumed in one months time. Especially in the warm summer months, dogfood stored improperly (should be air-tight container) can spoil! I've used a small new trashcan with snap-on lid for many years with great satisfaction.

Re: Noobie Bulldog Owner Needs advice
Welcome Joe, Rocco and family! You're in the right place...and your questions aren't dumb. Here are my thoughts:
1. Rocco bites our feet and hands incessantly. No amount of scolding makes him stop. And he bites hard! I wonder if I have made him feel like it's ok to bite? Or is he teething or something?
Puppies bite, but it's our job to teach them not to. The best way to do that is to say an immediate, sharp "no" and give him a brief time away from the fun...he wants your attention, and when he doesn't get it, he will learn that biting is not appropriate.
2. Rocco will pee his crate 2-3x a week. We get up with him at 2AM and 5AM to take him out and his last wakeful pee is 11PM. So he knows he's supposed to go outside, we don't have accidents during the day...only at night.
You may have to take his water up at about 7:00 or so. Does he have bedding in the crate? If so, I would remove it until he is able to make it through the night. How large is the crate? If it's too large, he may be able to pee in one part and lie down in another. If the crate is too large, you can get a divider to reduce the size till he's ready.
3. Rocco Poops about 6x a day. I feed him 2 cups of Iams per the instructions and a "few" treats. Seems like a lot of poops to me...
Iams has a lot of fillers like corn, which many bulldogs can't digest well. You may want to change his food (but if you do, please do it gradually). You can do a search on this and the general forum for tons of information on food.
Thanks for any and all input...appreciate it!

Water source
The only thing I will add to Ela1ne's thorough and sound advice is to take a fresh stool sample to your vet. Have them check for parasites as well as giardia. Giardia can cause excessive bowel movements.. Giardia is hard to find, but there are in house snap tests and it can be sent to a lab for determination. With a pup this age, I would also suggest boiling your tap water until you get results back from the fecal sample. Giardia or other impurities are present in some water systems and after treatment, boiled water can prevent further infection.
