Nighttime Hacking

For the last few nights, Deuce has woken us up because he is making hacking noises like he has something in his throat. We always get up and take him out of his crate to see if he is ok, give him water, etc. He doesn't seem to do it during the day it is only between 1 and 3 in the morning, convenient huh?! Our humidifier did just break, so we haven't been running that recently, could it be because it is too dry? Any other thoughts?

The bordatella vaccine is good but...

it doesn't cover all the strains of kennel cough so don't think that your dog is totally protected by this. Its still smart to stay away from any dog that is coughing or has a thick nasal discharge. happy.gif

Lemon Juice?

I heard lemon juice helps loosen up phlegm, should I try this? Would lime juice do the same thing? Only asking because we have lime juice and no lemon juice.

I always keep

some on hand.  I had clavamox 375mg and started that.  He is great now.  He weighs between 45 50 lbs.  I gave it twice a day with food.  It starts out with hacking cough, then comes the clear runny nose.

Re: Not sure but..

Deuce was at the vet on Monday, maybe he picked something up there? He does not have a runny nose or anything. Did you have to get any antibiotics?

Cash wakes up hacking when

we leave the heat up high - dry heat = coughing hacking Cash. It doesn't bother the others though.

Not sure but..

I have eight dogs, took my two 16 week old puppies to playh time at the trainers, they came back and gave this upper respiratorhy infection to everyone.  Some of the dogs responded with dry, hacking cough, one had terrible green runny nose, he was put on antibiotics, the others had spasms of reverse sneezing. This lasted a week or so,  I couldn't even take them for a walk, they would start coughing and sneezing.  It could also be the dryness in the air from the heat too.

yes

it's an antibiotic.  I always ask for more just to have available, because it's always on a weekend that something goes wrong!

We went to the vet...

it was kennel cough. He started really coughing and hacking and phlegm was starting to come up so I called Dr. Shaw. They were booked (and an hour away) so we ended up going to a local vet. Found out for some reason he didn't get the bordatella vaccine. So we will be getting that when we go in for his neuter. He must have gotten it at PetSmart or PetCo because he isn't in doggie day care or anything like that. So glad we got that figured out.
