Neutering before or by 12 weeks old?

I guess I am old fashioned but....why would a person who is breeding to obtain show puppies already have decided one was such a definite pet that they would neuter the puppy at or by 12 weeks old....I know shelters do it but : "What are pros & cons? What could make a puppy be 'so much a pet' that you would neuter him that young and sell him at 12 weeks old neutered?
Thanks for any feedback folks

Re: Neutering before or by 12 weeks old?

I know of a very responsible show breeder that had a young pup neutered because he was under for cherry eye surgery and only had 1 testicle descended. He was of course a great looking pup, but with his issues could only be considered a pet.
I don't advocate neutering before 10-12 months normally, but there are cases when doing it earlier makes good sense.

I realize it has been several years since I worked for the eye c

but I have great respect for the commitment and teachings I took from that job, and one was a comment by the husband/doc, who was a PhD/DVM, past-pres of ophthal. society, etc. etc...and he said we don't put a young dog under anesthesia for cherry eye under 16wks unless there are other over-riding conditions, like a severe ulcer...but if just cherry eye (or neutering in addition) he felt that the safety margin was unnecessarily risked under 16wks. The doc and his wife have both retired, but I still respect their guidelines. happy.gif

The risk of general anesthesia, however short, at that young age

far outweighs any "advantage" IMHO...and if one has such little rapport with the buyer to where a contract and Limited Registration both don't act to "control the use of the dog as stud" until the dog becomes at least 6mos old, then I feel it reflects very poorly on the breeder/seller. Even if the dog has some serious health issues, and they certainly should be acknowledged and evaluated thoroughly before purchase is consumated, I would think that rushing to anesthesia at this young an age is excessive. What if the dog ends up with cherry eye, or umbilical hernia or another one of the small issues that sometimes we see with puppies in their first year...that might mean TWO anesthesia's in a short time! sad.gif

I have no idea why anyone would neuter a dog

at 12 weeks. I am aware that shelters will neuter very young for obvious reasons but a private breeder doing it, is a mystery.
