Need help please...

We live in Canada and purchased two bulldogs from the states.  I picked them up from the airport this afternoon and instantly noticed they both had sores in the folds of skin on their face.  The hair inside and even around these folds is horribly stained and it seems tender and painful.  One girl has it worse than the other but they both have it. We have owned a bulldog before and never had this problem as we would give yer a quick wipe with a baby wipe every day.  My question is.... how do we treat this now that we have it?  So far I've cleaned it with an antibacterial soap and then dried it really well and then applied polysporin ointment.  It does not appear infected but does look like it would be very uncomfortable.  I feel terrible for these girls and any advice as to how I can help them would really be appreciated.  Thank-you so much!

And... i'm new here so I dont know if it's this board or the other I'm supposed to post on.  Perhaps I'll post on both and the moderator is more than welcome to remove one of them if needed.  Thanks again!

i hope you gave the person who sold these dogs to you....

a little pc of your mind.....no respectable person would ship in that condition....

ok lecture over.....scrub those folds really well.....i get a surgical scrub from my vet its the same stuff theyto use prep for surgery...other wise use good old soap and water...just make sure the soap is out....dry really well...then dust with a little gold bond....please note a little gold bond....the powder should not be caked in the fold....

some use reg unsented baby wipes....i do and use daily..espcially now the weather is a little humid....

Hi and welcome...

After cleaning and drying well you can use diaper rash ointment...like Desitin.  That will  help to sooth it and help it to heal.

The breeder should be ashamed of themselves for selling dogs in this condition.

It gets worse...

One of the girls has been squinting since i picked her up at the airport.  My vet has informed me that she has entropion in both her lower eye lids and will require corrective surgery.  I understand that this condition is not uncommon in bulldogs but to actually put a pup in a crate and send it to someone when the pup can barely open her eyes astonishes me.   I have a bill of sale, all the flight documentation and a letter from my vet indicating the condition of the one with the entropion.  If its not ok to mention breeders specifically then I sincerely apologize and please feel free to edit this post.  If you need to contact me I can provide you with the documentation I mentioned.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my post and offer help.

The breeder

Did you get a health certificate from the breeders vet stating the pups were in good health?  I see they have a guarantee and that you must return, at your expense, of course, the pups if they are not healthy.  Why don't you do that?  Did you contact this breeder and tell them the problems your vet has discovered and if so, what were you told by the breeder?

Ive tried

Ive emailed and called and they are not responding.  She is completely aware of the situation.  I have a certificate stating the pups are healthy enough to fly.  Ive called that vet to see if he saw what our vet saw but he has not returned my call.  So far this breeder has abandoned us... there is no question about that.  If she does ever contact us or make any effort to do the right thing then I will certainly make that publicly known.  I will make a couple more attempts to contact her.  My emails to her have made it very clear how upset and frustrated we are.  It's hard to be calm and polite when something like this happens.

breeder

Well, it's a holiday weekend, it is possible they are not home.  I would send a certified letter, requiring their signature with all the information you have state and include copies of the examination from your vet.  Do you want to return both puppies?  State that you have done as they have required in their contract and that they have not responded to your continued attempts to contact them.  Be very careful what you state in print online, I know you are upset, but it is possible they have had some sort of emergency or problem and are not able to respond quickly to you.  How long have you been trying to contact them?  Did you take the pups to your vet within 48 hours as required?  Could you have your vet contact her vet?   Did you receive pictures of these pups prior to receiving them and if so, how old were they when the pictures were taken and how long after that did you receive the pups?  Tear stains are a problem many bulldoggers have, unfortunately, as well as issues with the folds, but those things can be corrected.  They eyes are the problem, I would assume.

check to see if the state has a lemon law.....

dont walk on egg shells i tried to give my bca breeder the benefit of the doubt and all for nothing,,,,,entropian is hard to tell untill at least six months...those wrinkles or the rope could be making it look like entropian.... i would hold off thier....other then being sent in a dirty condition what else is wrong?

i would check for a lemon law i would call the better business bureau and make a complaint....

i dont know the person your talking about have never heard of them...are you sure of where you purchased your puppies???  was it a bca member..do they show......do they sell to pet shops??? get my meaning???

I checked the website...

Hi David,

This situation makes me really sad. I went to the website and it seems like they need to abide by their health gurantee(listed below) since your dogs are clearly not in good health and issue you a refund.

"Buyer will have 48 hours from the time they receive their puppy to have it examined by a veterinarian of their choice. If the veterinarian finds the puppy to be in poor health in that 48 hours, Seller will upon the return of the puppy refund the purchase price or replace the puppy with a puppy of equal value. All expenses incurred by the Buyer on returning the puppy to Seller will be the responsibility of the Buyer. Replacement will be shipped to Buyer at the Buyer’s expense."

Thoughts...?

I really hope the breeder does the honorable thing, responds to your calls/emails and accepts responsibility for sending you dogs that aren't healthy.

ufortunately, the skin fold

ufortunately, the skin fold irritations could have occured during their flight, sweating, etc.  I have lookd at my Bella in the morning and by night time it's terribly red.  Get this ointment called ENDIT.  It's fabulous.  You can go to their website www.endit.com.  The eyes too are something that can be corrected.  Unfortunate for you, but still correctable.  I don't think the breeder is a respectable person.  To do this to someone clearl indicates they are in it for the money nvovled, and as we all know, there are so many outlays of money when raising a litter, you probably just abot break even.  Most breeder are looking to produce a show dog for themselves, before makig money off of the pups.  That said if the puppy requires entropion surgery, please go to a vet that specializes i eyes.  I had my shar-pei done along time ago fro a regular vet and the outcome was awful.  His eyes were so over corrected that they were always red and inflamed.  I have had five of my other dogs done at different times of course, all by the specialist, and they have all worked out wonderfully.  I am sory that you have encontered thess problems, but I do feel that the breeder should give some of the money back to cover the immediate vet expenses and of course the eye surgery,  good luck with that though.  I had a wonderful breeder with my Spike, lover her to death.  Helped me alot when he had to have throat surgery at a very young age.  That is a sig of a good breeder, onw that sticks around and will help you at any tie.  also the people here on this site are awesome.
