I have a 2 yr old bulldog, Isabella. 2 weeks ago she was diagnosed with a bowel infection. She was given a shot of antibiotics as well as oral antibiotics. Rice and ground beef for a few days and was back to her crazy wild self but I noticed a little blood in her stool. She is now on a second round of antibiotics.... she has since been tested for Giardia which came back negative. My vet thinks that it is probablly a bit of Colitis and isn't very concerned. He has now switched her food to Science Diet Light...
Needless to say I am very concerned...
If anyone has any advise or suggestions on this I would love to hear it!
THANKS!
any grain free food is good.....
check here on the board many people have listed their kibble likes and dislikes....if you feed kibble go grain free and low protein under 25% is good....

Thanks for the advise! I'll try it... If I want to switch her from Purina Pro Plan chicken and rice, what do you suggest and how much? She weighs 65 lbs...
Thanks!

stay on the burger and rice....
for another week....stop the veggies in case their the problem....wilson eats carrots and some times they make his stools have alot of mucus....go slow tummies are delicate machines....go with some pepcid that keeps the acids from over flowing....if you slowly start adding in the reg food and see a change in the bowels back off a bit....
yougurt is good and i would proably keep going witht he yougurt added to hamburger/rice for a week...then start adding in the reg food....make sure no one is slipping in any treats...till she is better...
bullies seem to have tender tummies....so i would also get a routine of either a pepcid ac in the evening or a tums....

I like Judy's comments
and while I use white rice and lean ground beef rather than brown rice, its mostly the starch and fiber that you want to be using with minimal lean protein source. If she has digestive trouble with beef, you can substitute ground chicken or turkey, again sauted without seasoning and added to the cooked rice. I wouldn't be overly concerned about a drop of blood, which I presume was "red" rather than dark or blackish...the color indicates 'where' in the digestive tract the irritation is...if its dark its from higher up, probably small intestines...if its red than its from large intestines, of which the bowel portion is the last section. When you slowly start back on her regular diet (or choose to go with another one) be sure to allow a couple weeks to return to full-normal. I also think that adding some probiotics now, either in capsule form (pharmacy) or using natural yogurt (1-2Tblsp) should help balance out the gut flora from using antibiotics.

Thanks Judy!
The vet did a rectal exam and saw some mucus and a blood. She is in an air conditioned apt...
She has been on rice and ground beef for the majority of the 2 weeks... She hasn't had any loose stools or any signs of anything being wrong excpet for a drop of blood in her stool. Do you have any idea of what it could be?
I normally give her Purina Pro Plan Chicken and Rice. Along with fruit and vegetables... In your opinion what food should I be giving her? How much longer should I continue the rice and ground beef?
Thanks!

bowel infection???? anyway is it hot were you are...is she getting over heated??? before i fed that horrible science diet i would go back to brown rice not white rice (white rice is a processed rice) and boiled hamburger...drain the grease away...keep on this diet for two weeks even if the bowels are looking good.....also during this time i would start adding in some yougurt to get the gut bacteria going....antibotics kill the good bacteria in the guts.... take your time in going back to your normale food.....
but a bland diet should be for 2 weeks not three days....tummies take a while to get back in order... try a little pepcid ac to help with stomach acid mine all get two at night....
hope this helps....
also use some pedilyte....make ice cubes out of it and put into reg water....wil help keep the system in order....
