The new puppy, now 5 months, has had all shots. His first week home he was treated with antibiotics for residual kennel cough and recovered completely.
Now after being boarded for 4 days he has a slight cough occasionally and a clear nasal discharge--not a lot, but visible.
What to do? (BTW, he was only partially boarded, he was out most of the day) Is a vet visit required, or is it OK to wait and see?
LOL! Yep, getting stepped on is a normal thing in my house!
Poor Isabella is the worst, she just always is right there...poor girl!
I know that a runny nose doesn't come with KC, but you just never know what might have been left over from the chest congestion. But you are probably right...I would just keep an eye out tonight and call your vet first thing. Have you taken a temp? Might want to check that just to be on the safe side also!
My brother and The Prof were inseparable. Two peas in a pod. He really took treating a dog like a person to new heights!! That dog had whatever she wanted....bout drove my dad out of the house!

Re: I'm sorry. Prof. not Prf:-)
Love the artichoke story!
I don't think this is a return of the kennel cough, because he is barely coughing at all, maybe once or twice a day, and then just a tiny cough. The antibiotics were several weeks ago and really knocked out the last vestiges. And he has since been vaccinated for kennel cough, which I realize is not foolproof. But his nose is definitely running.
I will call the vet tomorrow. I, also, once almost lost a dog to kennel cough, but I'm sure this isn't kennel cough--well, pretty sure. Kennel cough doesn't come with a runny nose, does it?
Thanks for the help, and no one can be more of an alarmist than me--I accidentally stepped on him yesterday--he loves to be underfoot--, and spent the rest of the night apologizing and checking him out for damage:)

We used to have an Australian Shep/Pointer mix dog. Her name was Zha Zha, but my oldest brother called her The Prof. He used to sit her at the dinner table and pull artichokes through her teeth by holding her mouth closed while he did it. She loved it!!! I remember her sometimes when I see your name:-) Thanks for bringing good memories!

Hi Prf...I can't say much that would help...
But I have had a girl with pneumonia unrelated to Kennel Cough, and a Beagle that almost died from kennel cough that progressed extremely quickly into severe pneumonia. I would just be watchful and call you vet in the morning. I would, if it were me, put your boy on another round of antibiotics to be absolutely certain pneumonia doesn't develop...it can come quickly and be deadly.
If he gets stuffy tonight you can use a nebulizer (humidifier) with some vicks menthol in it:-) Might keep him clear overnight until you can call your vet. Just keep an eye on him
I hate to sound like an alarmist, but I have had scary times with kennel cough:-(. I don't mean to frighten you though, it could be just a minor flare up again of the previous issue, and he may not have been all the way cleared up before he was boarded. Good luck!

I'd just wait and watch for now...
usually a URI comes with more than one symptom (clear nasal discharge) and would be accompanied by either cough, lack of appetite, lack of energy, elevated body temp, etc. Vaccines work by giving your pet a small dose of non-replicating form of the virus itself, so some slight signs of the issue are not uncommon. Think of people getting a flu shot, who report some signs of it after receiving the shot itself.
I'd wait another day or two to see if there are any changes. Do you know you can get in to see your vet the same day you phone? If dog needs to be seen, I would call for appt or just show up and wait to be "fitted in"...not take 'no' with a puppy.
