my sick boy

Hi my name is mike. I have a two year old bulldog(brutus) who has been sick with skin irritations since the day I brought him home. The poor little guy has had maybe two weeks in his life without pills and irritations. I have been to three differrent vets and he is no better. actually he seems a little worse because now the antibiotics seem ineffective. We have tried so many things that i am now wondering if the vet has a clue. There has been skin scapings, suggested food allergies, airborn allergies, and oh, its common in bulldogs, that they are a genetic nightmare. Well I am not buying it. I need help and I do believe my boy can be healthy. Can anyone give me any ideas?

other suggestions

I use All Free and Clear and regular bleach in as hot of water as possible for the dog's bedding (and my stuff too, I'm the one with issues from detergents and fragrance additives) and do a DOUBLE RINSE on every load to be sure to get out any lingering suds.
Another thing to investigate is any household cleaners you use; carpet shampoo, floor cleaner, spray dusting, bathroom cleaner, etc. - even if the dog isn't in the room, the fumes can go thru the whole house. Also I have an air purifier that I run at least once a day. It helps with my allergies and the bonus is the house doesn't have a 'doggy' smell to it.
There are things to give your dog to boost his immune system that may be better for him than being on antibiotics so much. I'd start with giving a pro-biotic, Ben-e-Bac, Pro-Zyme or Fast Track or even just an active culture yogurt with his meals to enhance his gut function. The AB kill off the good bacteria as well as the bad and the greater part of the immune system gets it's strength from the gut.
Has your Vet had you try medicated shampoos for his skin issues? My dogs do better with frequent baths in Clorhexiderm or Maleseb shampoos than they have ever done on AB.
Look for a food that is Holistic or Natural, that kind won't contain any color or flavor enhancers, no unpronounceable chemical additives and likely won't have corn or wheat in it which many dogs are allergic to. From my experience you don't necessarily have to do grain-free to get a quality food for a dog with skin and coat problems, but it may take some shopping around to find what works best for your dog.

food and detergent

Hi Mike,
I had a girl that it was common for her to have skin irritations... mostly Staph infections. She was on antibiotics for almost her first year however things have improved and we haven't had any problems for a long time. I did try different foods and I think that was the solution for us however, I know that many swear the detergent they use to wash the dogs bedding can also be a problem. You might want to try something fragrance freeand color free... all the free stuff. Worth a try!

have you tried

changing his food? usually vets don't suggest this, but sometimes all you need to do is find the right food.
