my sick boy

Hi my name is mike. I have a two year old bulldog(brutus) who has been sick with skin irritations since the day I brought him home. The poor little guy has had maybe two weeks in his life without pills and irritations. I have been to three differrent vets and he is no better. actually he seems a little worse because now the antibiotics seem ineffective. We have tried so many things that i am now wondering if the vet has a clue. There has been skin scapings, suggested food allergies, airborn allergies, and oh, its common in bulldogs, that they are a genetic nightmare. Well I am not buying it. I need help and I do believe my boy can be healthy. Can anyone give me any ideas?

yea but...

wasn't the other blanket you gave him washed in Tide too? Maybe it was whatever the blanket was made out of.

ITS THE TIDE DETERGENT!!!!!!!!!

Brutus did so well yesterday after his bath. most of the redness was gone, and no bumps. He didnt lick his paws or scratch the whole day. Brutus spent most of the day in my sons room after the bath because he gets mad. He hates bath time. Meamwhile I spent the rest of the day cleaning my room. I shampooed the the carpet and washed all his bedding and mine. That is a routine with me. whenever brutus breaks out he gets a bath and all clean bedding. I dont let brutus in the room till I am completly done. I finally got done about nine pm and was ready for bed. I was tired!!!!! I laid down his favorite blanket and he layed on it immediately. It was lights out and thirty seconds later I heard him licking a chewing his paws. He usually does do that at bedtime. The licking and chewwing got worse and I had to yell at him to stop because it was so loud. I jumped up out of bed and turned the lights on and saw how red he was. There were bumps and welts that werent there an hour ago. The whole area where the the hair had thined was all red again. What had happenned in the last couple of minutes that made him break out so bad. All I did was give him his blanket. Oh my god its the tide!!!!!!! I immediately took that blanket and gave him a differrent one. He made his nest and laid down and the licking stopped. This morning when I checked him the bumps were gone and the redness wasnt as bad. It also explains why he hates bath time because as I said earlier I always wash his bedding if he gets a bath. Well I hope that is all he is allergic to. At least now I have a starting point. You cannot imagine how bitter sweet this is. I am so glad I know now what makes him break out but it means doing a whole lot of laundry again today!ugh@#$% Thanks for the advise. I would not have realized if you wouldnt have planted that seed. Thankyou so much!!!!! I will let you know how it all turns out. Thankyou,Thankyou,Thankyou.

glad you figured it out..

glad he is feeling better. Remember, another option to the Malaseb Shampoo is Chlorihexiderm Shampoo. Others on this board have said their dogs had reactions to Malaseb. I swore by the stuff and used it for years until just recently when Junior decided to have an allergic reaction to it.

Dogs can do fine with food and their environment for years and then suddenly develop an allergy to it. Sounds like grass is an example of that in Brutus' case. You said he used to play on it with no problems and how he is allergic.

Is he neutered?

blanket

It is possible but if it had been it was several monthes ago. The blanket had been put away in one one of those plastic containers. The blanket that I washed he has had since a baby. About nine monthes ago when he was his healthiest I used a differrent detergent. It is the only thing I have changed with him. I just washed all his bedding and mine again. The next couple of days will tell all. Since I have removed all the bedding his redness has subsided. I think this is the problem. I will let you know.

has any vet considered a yeast infection?

can you post a pic of him? I'd like to see what his skin looks like. Stink coming back so soon after a bath makes me think it could be a yeast infection "Candida". Over use of antibiotics kills good bacteria along with bad and that can lead to a yeast infection.

Are his stools "airy" looking rather than firm and solid?

What shampoo are you using on him?

Have you cut out ALL people food (that includes nibbles and bites), cookies, and treats?

Other things he might be allergic to that you may not have thought of--

plastic/vinyl toys
his bedding
your detergent or fabric softener
grass

vet recommended

Lynn, Brutus has been on some kind of antibiotic and prednisone since I brought him home. I have been to three different vets and they all treated him with the same medications. Brutus has had no less than five skin scrapes and each time no mites. My first vet said brutus had food allergies, because he had broke out within two weeks after he started hard food. (PURINA PUPPY CHOW) I have tried so many brands and types of food (some very expensive) that I am running out of options. In the two years I have had brutus I have probably spent close to 5000.00 trying to clear up his skin. The money is a small concern but doesnt compare to my concern to make my boy better. Not even close! The other thing is that even after all the money, vets, different foods, shampoos, prescriptions, anti-itch sprays, there has not been the first sign of relief for him or me. Brutus is such a good boy and all I want is for him to have some normal puppy time without all the itching. I honestly do not know where to go from here. The last three weeks have been really bad. Brutus now refuses to eat his dog food. I suspect because he has had so many kinds thrown at him. It could be he feels bad from all the medications, I just dont know anymore. He hates bath time and I have to litteraly pick him up and take him to the bath. I gave him a bath on saturday because he stunk so bad and its monday morning and he stinks as bad as ever. It seems nothing ive tried helps with the oder or the itching. So I am considerring a new vet and dont know if its the right thing. So there you have it. I am at a loss. I want to help my boy but not sure I can drag him to yet another vet. He doesnt deserve all this missery. If there is something you could suggest I would be grateful. Thanks, Bruty would be too!

Try any of the perfume/dye free brands

I use Tide and have never had a problem but any laundry soap could cause skin irritation, changing is worth a try.

Tide has been known to be a problem for some dogs..

many of us with sensitive skin dogs don't use it. I'm happy to hear he is off the meds and feeling better.

allergy to grass and plastic

Brutus has an allergy to plastic for sure. As a baby he had plastic food bowls and was always broke out where the skin touched the bowl. I bought stainless steel and it went away. Through all the medical diagnostics they did determine that he was allergic to grass. The doctor took blood and sent it to texas where they had it tested. Two weeks later the vet told me he was allergic to grass, ragweed, mold, and pollen. I never saw the report and thought it was odd because he didnt have the problem the year before. I wonder if the airborn allergies was just a deversion because they didnt know what was wrong. I have given Brutus only four shots and had to quit because his skin allergies flared up. The vet had me stop the shots because he thought Brutus was too weak to continue. Funny thing is I havent started the shots again because he has shown improvement in the last couple of days and quite honestly I dont think he has airborn allergies. The whole tide detergent idea has me confused. Do you really think that tide might be too harsh? Thanks for all the advice. It has helped alot. The next couple of days will tell alot. He already seems more energetic.

I agree, yeast infection

with all the antibiotics, he may very well have a yeast infection.

I know you are trying everything you can, sometimes vets can't/don't connect the dots.

Ester C is ...

Vitamin C, just look for Ester C on the front label. I don't know if I would do this, I would leave well enough alone until you find out what the issues are. Maybe it would help some, it would at lease boost the immune system up a little.

I completely agree with Lynn....less is better.

Along with a good food, like Wellness (which I also feed, but Natural Balance Limited Ingredients is an awesome food as well), I give a tablespoon of plain, fat free yogurt at every meal (twice a day). That is a pro biotic, it helps keep the correct "good" bacteria in the gut, which is important especially if your boy is on antibiotics. Those can strip the gut of the good bacteria and make matters all that much worse.

Here is what I would do with your dog. Stop everything, have a skin scraping done by a different vet to see what is going on with that. Put your boy on Wellness or Natural Balance GRAIN FREE or with only good grains in it.(Natures Recipe is not working for you). Get the yogurt going at the same time, and feed nothing but the actual dog food and a scoop of yogurt in each meal. No treats, no other foods at all, especially human food which can also cause allergies. Clean ears with an ear wash, but don't pour the fluid in the ear, rather put it on Q-Tips and clean that way so you know there isn't any left over moisture in the ear canal. Wash in a good medicated shampoo such as Maleseb.

If you don't see a marked improvement in three or four weeks, then you will need allergy testing done (I think you said you had this though, I don't remember).

Re: pro-biotic

Here is a definition of probiotics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probiotic and a definition of prebiotics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prebiotic_(nutrition)
Both are beneficial to overall health and can really assist in getting a handle on skin and coat problems. These aren't quick fixes but in time should give some improvement.

Another thing that might help him is coconut oil http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/coconut-antimicrobial.html

A basic shampoo that has helped my dogs is liquid castile soap (Dr. Bronner's is the brand I use) in the Tea Tree Oil variety. It is soothing and healing to irritated skin. http://www.sunbirdmanagement.co.uk/THETRUTHABOUTTEATREE/TeaTreeAndMRSA.htm

The great thing about all this stuff is limited to no side effects like can be seen with antibiotic and other medications.
Not sure what to tell you about getting Brutus to like baths - my dogs jump into the tub to be bathed, even if I hadn't planned a bath for them. They love their kiddie pool on the deck too.

Re: my sick boy

Mike,
I am sorry that you are having such problems with skin irritations. I hope that the information I will pass along to you will help you. I have had bulldogs since 1978 and so have had my share of problems over the years. Bulldogs are very prone to skin allergies, and particularly if they are white. I had a bulldog with similar issues and dealt with it his entire life. My regular vet could not get his skin issues under control and referred me to an animal dermatologist. They were my life saver. Yes, it is expensive but this is what they deal with on a regular basis and are better suited to treat these issues. There are many different combinations of medications that can work for different dogs. I had the allergy testing done and found that my dogs allergies were environmental, which makes it harder to treat and get under control, but with the right combination of meds we were able to. He also got allergy shots. It is not something that can turn around immediately but I think that you would be wise to at least go for a consult with a dermatologist. My boy was white and once we got him on the correct meds and shots his coat was beautiful and he was very comfortable for the most part. Certain times of the year were worse then others but over all he did great. Bulldogs are prone to yeast and that needs to be under control or they can be miserable. Also feeding an allergy diet helps. I feed Natural Balance Fish and Potato. My dogs love it. I also bathe in Malaseb shampoo. It helps with itching and dogs that have yeast. I hope that this info helps you. I can sympathize having gone through it. As I said, my dogs dermatologist was a life saver. I have several bulldog friends that I have also referred and they too have gotten great results. A consult certainly cannot hurt at this point. Good luck to you and I hope that you can find some relief for your boy.

Mike, why is he taking antibiotics?

where is the infection?

Mike, we have had plenty of dogs come here through rescue with horrible skin and ear infections. Looking through the previous vet records, I find vet visit after vet visit, several rounds of prednisone and several rounds of antibiotics. I haven't yet figured out what any of it was for. So, the first thing we do is to stop everything, we have switched them all to Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato, used an ear wash-instead of using oral antibiotics. Malaseb shampoo works great. Every dog without fail improves immediately and all have recovered completely. A few have been malnourished so we have given a multi-vitamin. I am a firm believer that less is better.

pro-biotic

I would love to get brutus off all the medication but not sure what pro-biotic is and would like to learn more. I have tried several shampoos but they seem to irritate more than soothe and he hates bath time. I know there is something I can do but just havent found the right product or technique. I am open to any ideas. Thanks

You are right, stop everything and go back to

square one. You listed the protein sources in his food but not the brand of foods. Corn is a huge allergen, so be sure that anything you feed him does not contain corn. It sounds as if your dog may have a staph infection, hence the smell. Has he had a skin scraping to rule this out? Bathe him in medicated shampoo.

Also, thyroid problems can cause havoc with the skin/ears. Has he been tested for it?

thanx to all

I thank you all for your responses. I want my boy brutus to be healthy and am confused about what to do now. Brutus has been on venison, duck, vegetarian, lamb, and others. I had just started his allergy shots a couple of monthes ago and had to stop because of yet another break-out. The vet had me stop, thinking it might be to strong and had me bring it in to have it diluted. He was tested for airborn allergies and the said he was allergic to all the standard stuf, grass, rag weed,pollen,mold,ect.. We have not started the shots as of yet because we cant clear him up enough to continue. So is it food or airborn allergies? I may have to start from square one but in the meantime I need to find some sort of relief from the itching. He chews and licks his paws constantly. If I dont give him baths every couple of days he stinks to high heavens. Theres times when he digs at himself till he bleeds. His appetite is almost nonexistent. Even through all this he is still so good.

Re: my sick boy

Mike,

We are going though the same thing with Winston or 6 month old he has scabs on his back and has had staph his is falling out like crazy. We are starting to wonder if the two different Vets we have went to know what they are talking about. That's what stinks about not having a Bulldog Vet in our area. But some of the things that we are trying now.

1. All natural food and treats no fillers. (We did and it didn't help)
2. We bought him new bedding. (We did and it didn't help)
3. Going to stop Frontline and Heartguard for a month see if that helps. (Going to try next month)
4. Our breeder told us to give Ester C and we are stopping that. (Started today)
5. Give him two 25mgs of benadryl a day. (Going to start if Ester C doesn't fix it)

From what we have found out and understand a person needs to go back to square one to the very basics and see it that helps. I don't have the answer to your question but I just thought I'd put these out there since this site has helped us so much in our Bulldog journey! happy.gif Best of luck to you.

Cleaning products can be harsh too

might be a good idea to switch to all natural products if you don't already. Vinegar/etc

Are they just guessing his allergies or has an allergy test been done? If not that would probably be incredibly helpful as well.
